Took my bitch for a mating this morning everything went well but I was a bit bemused by the studs behavior. After they had tied 5 minutes later he just laid himself down still tied to my bitch so of course she had to sit down.He seems so laid back and I was wondering if anyone else with a large breed dog has had this happen. He has a good hip score so its not a as if he is in pain or anything like that he just seems so laid back. But they did only tie for 10 minutes so I don't know if she will conceive or not. I am going to take her back again tomorrow. The owner of the stud said he has done this a couple of times before with other bitches although she says he never used to. He is 4 years old now maybe its his age.LoL

Don't know about the laying down bit, but I was really worried when my bitch was mated (twice) as each time they only tied for 1 or 2 minutes at most. However she has 8 pups now!

I've had really laid back males before now. Suppose that's nothing unusual because it's the female once they've tied that does all the hard work :d

LOL I helped a friend with a mating with her newfie & the stud did exactly this & fell sleep whilst three of us held him up as the bitch refused to lie down Not easy holding up a 12+ stone dog :O
My boy stands there looking like the whole thing is totally boring him. I think it is just the way some of them are. His dad is like a bull in a china shop.

I attended a Rottie mating some years ago, and the aged owner trained all her stud dogs to lie down when tied as she didn't have the strength to support both dog and bitch!

Strictly speaking you don't even ned a tie at all, just to be sure the dog has ejaculated. If there is any tie at all then the dog has, so the length is immaterial. With slip matings of course you don't know if the dog has or hasn't and that is why they are not particularly satisfactory. Aslo a tie causes a vaccum, and it soes seem to help propel the sperm along the bery long reproductive tract of the bitch.

I have had a dog fall fast asleep me holding him. So maybe not a bad thing :-)
A 5-10 min tie is fine.

Down to business and gets the job done - obviously a boy with lots of other "stuff" to do ! :D
We had this happen with our dog sam and pepsi. He stood for about 10 minutes and then it was if he got so bored and promtly dropped himself to the floor and stayed there for another 15 minutes or so. Pepsi had no real choice but to lay down too. She went on to have 11 pups. Sam is usually a complete barnpot and so doing nothing for more than a couple of minutes he just got bored. This was his first mating.

I am pleased to know that this stud isn't the only one who has this strange sort of behaviour. I just found this amusing as he seems to have this laid back attitude and lets the world pass him by.Thanks for putting my mind at rest, as when I left her place this morning I was beginning to wonder if something wasn't quite right. But it appears to be quite normal then for some of the larger breed dogs. Talk about falling
asleep on the job LOL
