What age is the best time to breed a golden retriever?
I have a 19 month old who I want to breed, Her season is due july (6 months) from her last one, But I have another bitch who is 8 months and not had a season yet, I was told that if she comes in season it could bring the other one in early, so she could whelp at 21-22 months old is this too young?
Any help please.

I would think that this breed would be not to have a litter before the age of 2. Also have you had her hip scored and any other health tests that the breed requires?
Hi, Yes she was 4-4 in her hip score, Having eye test next wednesday. The breeder of my bitches and the stud owner said that she would be fine to have a litter 22months as it was close to 2 years. Anyway hoping she will wait a bit longer. over protective mum as they say.

WEll I would sayt whelping at 22 months is too young, why the hurry, she will be even better at 28 or 34 months. Our breed club states not to whelp under two years old, adn they are a smallert bred than yours. In my expereince shw ould still be immture at 22 months with plenty of physical and mental developement to go yet.

For a Golden I would be looking at the age of 3 for a first litter to let her physically & mentally mature. She is still a baby herself, don't thrust motherhood upon her!
Got to agree with the others. I mated Molly just after her 2nd birthday purely in the vain hope it would chill her out a bit and have to say she has not been as good a mother as the other two girls who I mated at 2 and 1/2 and 3 1/2. If they are good mothers it does make life so much easier.
