Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding bitch 8 years
- By sharonb [gb] Date 25.05.05 08:15 UTC
Have any of you here had special permission to breed a bitch of 8 years. My bitch isnt 8 yet but if I were to breed her shed have pups 2 weeks after her birthday.
She as been to see vet for a examination and he says she is in exrtemely good health. She is an Husky which do tend to age very well.
What are the chances of getting permission from the KC.
THANK YOU

The KC is highly unlikely to grant permission, I'm afraid. The KC site says that the bitch must have had at least one previously registered litter, and there must be exceptional circumstances for it to be considered (ie she must have done a lot of winning and be an irreplaceable asset to the breed).

The Kennel Club refused to allow the Border Collie Sh Ch Dykebar Future Glory, that won the Group at Crufts to have a late litter so it is very unlikely.

The only Sibes I've known to get permission were ones which had done a lot of show winning i.e. they were Champions. I knew of another, which had done a bit of winning, but not enough to satisfy the KC that it would be benificial to the breed if she had a litter. It was also going to be her first litter, which is obviously a big no no, so she was refused. I think that unless you can show that your bitch has been proven of excellent quality, and can contribute something to the breed, then you are unlikely to get permission.

If it's a rare breed and the male that you were going to breed her to was a new line in the country or something that was needed then yes you would be accepted, but it has to be exceptional circumstances.  If this clause hadn't of been in nearly 4 years ago Briedog wouldn't have Gollie now :d  Lydia my girl was 8 and 1 week when she had her pups.  Didn't do her any harm at all and she's still running around like a 6 month old at nearly 12.  This was her third litter in total and as there had hardly been any of the breed bred at that time I think also that is why it was allowed.  Maybe more difficult now as there are more litters bred in the last year than we had in the first 8 years of the breed !

Cassie the beardie that when BIS at Crufts was given permission to have a litter after 8(well after 8 if my memory serves me right)even though she had had previous litters & the owner had female offspring from her, I remember another Ch Beardie missing Veteran at Crufts  because she too was in whelp well over 8 it seems to be IMHO the status of the breeder & not the bitch in some breeeds as I know of someone who had a Ch Bitch whose only daughter(the only other puppy from her  was a male) died in an accident & who would have wjelped at 8 years & 5 days if she  came into season on time The KC refused permission when the application was made three months before she should have been in season.. As it happened the bitch came in early by a month & so managed to produce a litter within the age limit. The breeder only usually took one litter from each bitch & never bred before the bitches were 3 years of age. The KC even asked for a vets letter to say the bitch ready had had puppies as they obviously thought she was trying to fake things(along with the stud dogs owner presumably)

Edited to add this is a minority breed too less than 150 puppies bred a year

Was Cassie not around before the 8 year rule was brought in though?

She as had 1 litter registered. When I spoke to the KC they said as long as she as had less than 5 litters it would be mostly down to what the vet said although it would still go infront of a board. Il have to wait and see then. Thanks

I will advise you now if she's due around the summer time get the paperwork in now.  They hardly have any meetings and I waited 4 months to find out, my dog was actually in season and mated before the meeting ended up happening, but at the time I was told by someone in the know to do it as it would be accepted due the the circumstances.  You can't believe how worried I was, but luckily for me it all turned out OK.

When i split from my ex we had in joint names a lovely bitch who was on 2 tickets, she had had 2 litters while we were together. After the split i retained the registration papers - to ensure that he could not breed from her (she was 7 years when we split - giant breed)
To cut a long story short - he forged my signature and applied to the KC to breed from her over the age of 8, they granted his request and she indeed had a litter in Aug 2001 3 weeks after her 9th birthday, he applied to register the litter in line with the season before as this was when the vet did the health check (i believe he claimed it was accidental!?!).  So pups were registered as born March 01!
Following my complaint the mother was put back into my ownership as i proved he had falsified my signature however the puppies were still registered and can be bred from!
Incidently the mother died 5 months after the litter from a mammary tumour...
To say i'm furious with the ex and the KC....

Well I dont blame you Sharon so would I be mad. If my dog was 9 then no way would I breed. its only as she is 2 weeks over and in extremely good health I want to.

No it was after, as she was well over 8 for her last litter as was the Potterdale bitch I cannot see why they were bred from again as Cassie was in whelp when she won Crufts. I know someone who tried to book a puppy from the litter she was expecting after Crufts & was turned down & told you can have one from her next litter if the KC approve a couple of years later Can't remember how much they were going to be but it was mega mega bucks Nearly all the puppies went abroad

I can never understand how people can justify charging over the odds for a pup based purely on the bitch or dog being big winners.  They are as likely to produce good or bad pups as their parents or brothers and sisters.

With that logic my next litter from my Champion bitch and her Champion mate who have produced well from their first mating with the shown daughter on 1CC and 2RCCs and her brother Top Puppy last year, should be priced higher than normal.  They will be normal pet price even though two of them if good enough are going abroad.

True Brainless. Another point is just because a dog isnt shown doesnt make it not as good as 1 that is shown.
Keatah the bitch Iam going to mate is a great example of the breed and many people have said they cant understand why I have never shown her saying they think she do really well.
Thing is I dont choose to do so. It wont make any difference what so ever to any pup she produces.

Sharon :-) , Can I ask why you want to have a litter from her?    Just curious.
- By sharonb [gb] Date 05.06.05 18:22 UTC
When she had her 1st litter 3 years ago there were many people wanting pups. I thought long and hard about breeding again I had to be sure I decided to go along.
Last year we had her mated and had more than enough good homes waiting for pups but she didnt take.
- By zalamazu [gb] Date 06.06.05 13:52 UTC
Are you sure you would be able to home the pups?. There are so many Siberian Litters about at the moment. I even know of someone with a litter from a Champion bitch that cannot find good homes for them.

Sure as I can be. Got people who have been waiting since last litter.
