Hi
I recieved in the post yesterday an envelope contaning cheek swabs from Waltham (pedigree) does anyone know anything about this. Someone has said they thought it was in Pamela Cross Sterns column in Dog World but I had a clear out and have not been able to go back and check.
Why do they want this and have they contacted the Animal trust who keep most dna on file. I find it suspicious as they do not want a pedigree just KC registered name
Maya

i have also received swabs havent got round to reading the paper work yet so not sure what its all about

I received this a couple of weeks ago. They do ask for KC reg number so pedigree isn't needed. There is short thread on it here if you do a search for Waltham.

Thanks but why are the KC giving information out to a pet food manufacturer about our dogs. I am not sure if I agree with that. Does that mean if I had the registration number of someone elses dog I could get their pedigree etc: what about health matters are the KC giving that out as well?
Maya
Hi I work at Waltham and can confidently say that the only reason that the envelopes come from waltham is that the AHT dna profiling on behalf of the KC are working from the waltham office. Nothing suspicious believe me.

I too received mine a couple of weeks ago just after I'd moved so still got to do them but so many other things to deal with newborn pups being the most important waste of time lol. If you read the paper work it does mention Dr Jeff Sampson etc so I don't have a problem sending some off --- once I've worked out who does and doesn't share grandparents ekk now I have to search their pedigree's out amongst all the boxes lol.

I'm not sure if KC give (sell) out information on pedigrees to third parties but reg numbers for every litter with parentage, so therefore extended pedigree, is traceable through the KC published Breed Record Supplements.

Anyone can buy copies of the BRS, Maya, so all pedigrees of KC registered dogs are in the public domain anyway as are the results of the KC/BVA tests.
Much as Julie says ;), that's how long it takes me to type :)

so are you all sending them back is it ok nothing suspicious as im not sure wheather to send them or not

I have the Terrier BRS every quarter and do not have litter registrations in there just import reg numbers. Friends send me their litter reg no's for my database.
Gary can you give me any other information please. I will pass your info onto other wheaten owners. We have a very small gene pool and most of us are related in some way what will this do to the results as it says no related dogs

I would write" return to sender" on the envelope,i dont understand why pedigree of all people want these details

You will also no doubt be bombarded by adds etc. after they get your reply and your mailing address is confirmed. Unless it helps your dogs in some direct way then why send it??

If you have a look at this previous thread: http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?pid=502688;hlm=and;hl=waltham#502688 (has to be a cut and paste job I'm afraid) the credibility of this research has already been discussed. The Kennel Club do not have laboratories of their own so, it seems to me, they have to do the work in conjunction with somebody that has :)
Hello Maya and Frodo I will address your posts as best I can.
Although I work from Waltham I do not have any connection with the AHT.
I do however work for Pedigree and can assure you that we do not have any access to any information gathered by the AHT working from Waltham.
They are totally independant of pedigree and Royal Canin which is the brand under the waltham banner (not Pedigree).
The KC have implemented the Accredited breeders scheme which requires all animals within the scheme to be either permanently identified (microchipped/tattooed) or DNA profiled, the aim is that all dogs should be DNA profiled eventually.
My thoughts are this.
The only people who will be afraid of this are the ones that will be unscrupulous breeders, those that breed litter after litter from the same bitch and register them as coming from something else.
You should also be aware that the law states that your information may not be shared with any other party without your permission (data protection act) so as for being bombarded with ads etc you are wrong on that score.
I myself have all my dogs DNA profiled as I have nothing to hide, a shame everyone does not think the same way, that way we might be able to stamp out puppy farmers and those breeding from unsound stock with hereditary faults.

I can't understand Maya my BRS are chocker full of litter registrations.

I was sent the DNA swab kits to the other day, I have two of mine already DNA tested (under the accredited breeder scheme), but will be willing to resend and have the other spayed & castrated dogs (4) done this time. Just got to darn find time :-)
