When you have completed your new pups innoculations, and he is going out on his very first walk for socialisation, do you start straight away training him to walk with you, and not to pull on the lead? Or would this be too much too soon? When I say walk with you, I don't mean to a heel position I just mean so as he gets bigger you don't have your arms pulled off everytime you take him out. Also I have read the best way to train a puppy to walk with you is to stand still for how ever long it takes until the pup has stopped pulling, is this the best way or are there better alternatives?
Thanks :D
I started for the beginning with the puppies and I just stopped like you said when they pulled and wait till the look at you then you can carry on walking.

Get him used to the lead in the house - walk him around the house, the garden on his lead before you take him outside for his first "walk".
You can start on lead training as soon as you get him - you can even start on the "sit" "stay" and "come" before he sees the big wide world on his own four feet!
You'll enjoy it!

Thanks for your replies, and I will get him/her used to the lead before we go out for the first walk.
Would you start the training to walk with you the very first time you go out for a walk? I can imagine a very excited puppy only wanting to have a good sniff around, and get to know where he is, running around my ankles becasue I won't budge an inch until he stops bouncing around!
Edited to add: Margot did you get my post to you about NBT Aussies?

I saw it - but haven't had time to really look at it - but thanks for the link - it's something that always bothers me!
I'll probably post later this evening - 1st day back at work & we've got ring craft this evening as well......

Margot, All thanks to Daisy for the link - I spent all that time searching for it, even had hubbie going in to big depths of the cookie history and he couldn't find it, and Daisy comes up with it in an instant!
Hope you had a good first day back, it won't be long now till you will be a lady of leisure!
Daisy, Icequeen told me you have an Aussie from the same lines as what mine will be, so we will probably have the same problems! Oh why, oh why did I have to fall in love with a breed like the Aussie?? LOL ;)

You may find that the pup will be a bit nervous the first couple of times and that you may do more carrying than walking. If you practice with the lead in the garden from Day 1, then, once puppy has got used to the new, big wide world, he may start to walk better on the lead. I found the main problem with the lead was that Tara wanted to play with it all the time and it took a while and a lot of patient stopping and saying a firm 'No' before she would walk without chewing it :D
