Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / collars?
- By Darling [us] Date 02.12.03 14:07 UTC
While living in Great Britain, cousin got a collar for training.  I have not seen one in my part of the United States.  It was like a leather collar with an opening that had a triangle chain.  It seemed to work like a slip collar.  Here, I have only seen the all-chain slip collars.  Does anyone have any information on the collar I am trying to describe?

It's called a half-check. Very popular!

Think it's what we call a half-check. They are very popular as training collars, not so severe as a check chain, usually made of nylon or leather & can be adjusted so they won't slip off the dog's neck. i use them al the time, except on the Akita (with an enormous head), altho' I did have one Houdini-dog I wouldn't have trusted not to slip one!

Have a look at this website and click on the "collars" button to see photos of leather half check collars.

Hi

I think in the States they are called Martingale collars and should be available through any major pet shop.

Curious here... looking at those half check collars (the one that looks like a collar but with the chain I believe) how do you use it for trainging? Looks like something I may look into trying with my dogs but what is the proper way to use it... I know how to use the halti, prong and choke...

Thank you :)

Hi dollface,
The "combi" collar must be fitted correctly.  When pulled tight, the material (or leather) should just touch, the chain should not pinch the neck.  The idea is that the noise of the chain corrects the dog.  Not sure why this works, but it seems to!

I use them as normal collars.  the check of the chain is used because it's a loadish noise in the dogs ear.  Used abit like training discs are I suppose.  I just use them as normal collars as the go loose, all mine are wither walked on full checks or halti's.  The half check collar is as the collar because if needed to clip lead to it, it's more reliable then a flat collar.  Also use them in obedience training because they don't like full checks or halti's!!!!

Thank you

I think I may check into them, they should work good on two of my boston's.
