I know the weather is getting warmer, and dogs moult this time of year more than any other time. But my bitch is moulting like theres no tomorrow. I was told that this happens before they come in season, she was last in season january, Can she come in season again now?
can anyone advise please.
What breed is she and how old?
Hi KAB, She is a golden retriever and she is 18 months.

Has her coat been a thick coat since she was young and what has her previously moults been like (if she has had any) since you've had her. I'm just asking as I own two huskies who moult like clockwork this time of year and their fur comes out in clumps. Although my youngest one was a rescue. He's just tuned two years and is only just beginning to lose his puppy coat which should have gone at six months old!
This could be the case with your goldie. She may be losing her puppy coat in one go. Rare for the breed but it can happen!

she has never really had a thick coat, even at 8 weeks when we got her, and she lost most of her puppy fur this time last year, at about 7 months. But I have to say she does moult all year round. Another thing is a have 2 bitches now and the other one is 8 months and is losing her puppy fur and due for her 1st season, would this bring my older bitch in season early? maybe this is why I have a new carpet of fur.

Hi Lynn,
GR's are not my breed - I have BSDs who have a very obvious double coat (as do huskies) ;) As a rough guide bitches hold their coats for around 10-12 weeks after finishing their season (max 16 weeks totally in coat if you count during their season!) it then comes out in clumps
very quickly  however only bathing and blasting or else constant daily grooming for about a fortnight will remove all traces of the old coat. It then takes approximately 8-10 weeks to regrow fully at which point they're approaching or going into their next season. Males get it easy (typical ;) ) dropping coat just once a year.
The puppy moult and then subsequent junior moult in double coated breeds are usually the worst ones which is probably what you are experiencing now. Hopefully as your bitches mature the drop in their undercoat will be a little less dramatic but the frequency if their seasons are regular will be about the same. HTH, regards Teri :)
You could try using Restore it is availible from most dog shows although I cant think what the company is called which sell it direct but I am sure if you put in the search facility it will come up. I have found it to brilliant for bringing my bitches coat back after having puppies and my friend uses it on her goldie.

I think you will find it's just bcause the temperature has climbed and she'll be shedding what she doesn't need to keep cool. One of my bitches is in season at the moment and she hasn't shed any coat, I don't have Goldens but another gundog breed.
Regular grooming will help take out the lose hair, I have found Royal Jelly capsules helpful (I've used Restore and found it made no difference), Evening Primrose Oil is useful too. Quistel shampoo is good for stimulating regrowth of coats.

It is very likely that both bitches will come into season within a week or so of each other. If she was last in season in January then she would be due about July so finishing her moult now would mean that she was just coming back into coat when her season comes. She may come in slightly early if the other one comes in in nextr few weeks.
Many thanks brainless, the moulting is now getting a bit less. If she comes into season slightly early is it wise to breed her, she is 19 months next week, In the book of the bitch it says golden retrievers usually come in season every 9-11 months, so would she be to young to have a litter at about 21-22 months old. The breeder of my girls said she would fine, and I have a great stud lined up for her, with a very good back-up.
