when you are on the motorway (or any road come to that) & a sign says for eg. london 53miles. where does that measurement go to?
eg the first junction off? the first bit of london? the centre of london?
(im just using london as an example, could be any place?)
I always believed it was the centre of the town, but who decides where the centre is? ;)
I always understood it to mean to the centre of the place name mentioned, something to do with the main Post Office of the place, could well be wrong tho :)

I believe it is to the centre.

cool,so in some instances i could be closer than it says!!!!
i know its not important but its been REALLY bugging me!!!!

I think as regards London, all the distances are to Charing Cross.
:)
Am curious JG.......Why Charing Cross......any particular reason??

It goes back hundreds of years, liberty. I understand that was traditionally the centre of
London- when Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea etc were all separate villages.
Edit: Ooh, Google just turned up
this!

good ole google!!
It must be 'as the crow flies'. I use to live near the A4 and it was signposted 12 miles to London. I could drive to Kensington in 12 minutes (on a very good day ;) ) but no chance of getting to Charing Cross!

thank you
what about to other places, the middle or when you pass the sign on the way in?
thgis is great,it wont haVE TO BUG ME ANYMORE!!!!

I'm sure it's the centre of town. When you look at road maps there's often a symbol showing where the distances are measured to.
:)

errr maps????i just drive around & follow a car with a cage in to get to shows!!!sometimes this dosent work & end up sitting on their drive with them ;)

:D :D Oh yes done that, well followed a cage anyway :)

LOL! :D :D
I also heard it always refers to Charing Cross. Don't ask me why?

Here's what you do Michelle, you pass the sign and reset your milage clock.............and drive to where the sign says. Once the miles are up, you'll know where they were measuring to!
As to the following a cage, I've done that before on the way to various obedience shows when I got separated from the rest of the convoy. Took me years to realise they were loosing me deliberately. :p Now we go to agility shows and others follow me!

Oh Michelle I am so glad it isn't just me who gets troubled by mindless trivia! I was thinking the very same thing yesterday when pondering how ever I could get to the place on the sign, within 6 miles!
Ok i had the job of resigning birmingham a few years ago, and the guidelines state that measurement is to the High Street.
However if the designer didn't read that guideline it could be to anywhere???
Hope that helps...
Sharon

I had a friend once who followed a car into a car park because it had a dog and cage in it. Only ended up being a security guard and they were nowhere near the show :d
