- By sambo [gb] Date 03.06.05 14:57 UTC
Tye my 13 mth old male sbt is still squating when weeing, he's killing my lawn. sombody give me a clue on where to start on getting him to cock? please help?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.06.05 15:11 UTC
Is he castrated?
- By sambo [gb] Date 03.06.05 15:24 UTC
yes he is jg!
- By Val [gb] Date 03.06.05 15:26 UTC
Then that's why he's still squatting, I'm afraid.
- By sambo [gb] Date 03.06.05 15:27 UTC
will he grow out of it?
- By Val [gb] Date 03.06.05 15:32 UTC
Probably not.  He has no male hormones!  That's why it's better to wait until dogs are over a year old and cocking their legs before you have them castrated, if you possibly can.  Vets don't tell you that, do they? :(
Sometimes the risk of dogs producing unwanted pups is more important and, of course should take priority.

is there any thing i can try ie pee post?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.06.05 16:05 UTC
Not really. It's something you'll have to live with - and be thankful that he'll never pee on a stranger's leg, or a market stall!
- By sambo [gb] Date 03.06.05 16:12 UTC
cheers jg i suppose i can put up with it there aint much else i have to moan about regarding his behaviour he's a little sweety

Must agree, if thats the 'worst' thing he does then you are obviously doing something right :)

That reminds me of a story that happened to us years ago, Stig who is now in rainbow bridge and OH and me had called into a lovely country pub on one of our walks and this man came in suited and booted and popped his brief case down yes.... Stig who was castrated wandered up and did a pee on it before I could call him oooh dear some explaining was done ... Sonja

I've got a neutered boy who very recently started cocking his leg -aged 3! I was gobsmacked!! (I did have a reason for neutering him early, before maturity, normally I would never do it.) He's also started to mate in season bitches -and tie!!

Some dogs never learn...IMO that's a good thing :D I just hate those dogs who have to cock their leg everywhere....hope Idõ(6 months and still not, thankfully, cocking his leg!) is reading this :D

A good tip if your lawn is getting burned by urine is just to mark where he 'goes' with a pebble and chuck a bucket of water over the spot, we do this after our two girls and out lawn is perfect...apart form the few areas we have missed that is :D
You can also buy special sparys but we found that the grass was so lush where we had sparyed the stuff in that it almost looked as bad as the grass was very dark and really thick and long compared to the rest of our moss-ridden lawn!

Mine is 12 months, not castrated and still squat... and i don't want him to start cocking his leg everywhere i'd rather he carried on like this :-)

My lab pup is 6 months on Monday and has cocked his leg for the first time today! He's had no practice 'lifts', just went from squatting last night to cocking this morning! We lost our old dog last night so I was wondering if it had something to do with that? Ah well, we're going to have to watch those legs now! :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 04.06.05 09:03 UTC
That's just spooky, Nikki!

It could be that your pup now feels that he's the 'man of the house'; or else Sam's given him a metaphysical nudge and said "Oi - grow up!"
:)
- By Nikki-deeee [gb] Date 04.06.05 09:19 UTC
Yeh, I was thinking that! Last night and this morning he does have an air of 'I'm the man of the house now', however he was barking at the window this morning because he could see the post man up the street (a really deep, 'mean' bark) but as soon as the post man came up the drive he was off - straight into the kitchen to hide, but whilst still barking! So maybe he's not that 'grown up' just yet! :-) So far he's been fine without sam, coping well, I hope it continues and he doesn't grieve too much.

Dogs and cocking their leg I think is a funny thing as pups.. when you see them doing it you think " aww he is now a young man" or I do :-D

My 13 month never did it till he was about 11 months, and my 4  month old has done it since  I got him 2 weeks ago.

Willis doesn't cock his leg cos he falls over if he tries :D

It is one of the reasons people like Guide dogs neuter males young do that they don't develop the annoying leg cocking habit.  Just let the grass grow a bit longer or water it after he pees.

Hi my lab was castrated at 6 months and squated until he was just over 2years and then suddenly started cocking his leg:)
- By bevb [in] Date 05.06.05 20:32 UTC
My Jack Russell pup is only 4 months old and already cocking his leg but my Lab was well over a year.

My 2 males both still squat, and they are both neutered, but as another poster said, I think this is a good thing, because they just wee because they need one, and do not go out cocking their legs up everything and anything :)
