Topic Dog Boards / General / Importing dog food?
- By frodo [au] Date 04.06.05 07:04 UTC
I was hoping someone may know what our laws are regarding importing food items from other countries?

The reason i'm asking is because the U.S has so many great dog foods and i would love to order some but am unsure if it will be allowed through or not??

I feed my dogs raw, partly because they thrive on it and because there are no commercial foods here that i would want to feed them, however there are a few U.S brands that i would not hesitate giving them :D

I think you'd find the importing costs prohibitive - you'd be charged VAT for a start.....

Do you think they would charge me for an import permit or could i just order it straight from the manufactures website?

I think food has to be handled a special way , I think food  has to be declared in a certain way. You would also have to pay quite high shipping costs because it isn't light :-)  and VAT on top + any expenses to collect the VAT.
Contact Customs they are pretty good with their advice.

Hi Frodo....i think that you may find it rather expensive, as like Blue said with the vat and everything on it...it may work out a lot more than what you pay now for your dogs food :-D :-D
