I'm looking to replace the carpet in my bedroom with something durable and puppy proof that will not absorb smells (of the dog variety) and is easy to look after.  I've got laminate in a few rooms and am going to get tiles in the bathroom.  I live in an old tenement building so the floors and a bit uneven and everything is squint e.g. balls roll from one end of room to other on their own!  the other stipulation is that it should be fairly cheap as i'm doing up my flat with a view to selling it.  any advice gratefully appreciated as I seem to have hit a stumbling block with ideas.

Hi Ali,

As you're in an old building does your bedroom have original floor boards?  If they're in reasonable condition you could sand them and then either stain or use floor paint on them - messy but not expensive ;)  The other thing is (easy way) if you're only doing it up to sell you could probably get a really cheap carpet off cut that just presents the right image rather than something of a quality you'd opt for if you were staying.

Hi teri, the old floorboards are wrecked and because there used to be a fireplace in every room there is lumps of rubble under the carpet - the bed is cleverly positioned over it to hide the evidence.  I thought about vinyl but would need wood underneath it to level out the floor and the room is approx 4.5m x 3.6m so it would be an expensive set up.  Because I'm so disorganised (and skint!) it could be 6 months before i even get it on the market and a house doctor cream carpet would be a nightmare with one staffy and another one planned.  I suppose I could leave the manky carpet for now and change it at the last minute but I would like it to be bonny for me living in too.  Has anyone got experience of rubberised floor tiles.  I don't know if they have a proper name but they feel like rubber to the touch and are really cool but not sure about being dog proof - or to everyones taste if I am to sell the house

Hi again Ali, have seen the type of rubber tiles you mean but not "up close and personal" :P   Don't see that they would be a problem with the pups but then that depends if they are likely to chew ..... I'd think any vynil or similar soft flooring which is tiled would be easier to find a corner of......

As to being to everyone's taste when you sell up I can't say they sound like my own taste but then I'm not the sort to be put off a house because of decor, flooring and a bit of clutter :rolleyes: and I don't think it's as much of an epidemic with most buyers as the house doctor et al would have us all believe :D
