Tara has, what I think is, a tick on her eyelid. It's only small - I haven't seen a tick for years so I'm guessing - it's round and flattish and red/pink and attached :) The dogs were due soon to be Frontlined, so I have done that, but I am loath to do anything else without advise as it's fairly near her eye. Any advice please ?

If you use the Frontline spray (rather than the spot-on) I'd spray some onto a cotton bud and dab that directly on to the tick - with someone holding her very still, of course! That should kill it quickly.

apply a small amount of vaceline over the tick but mind her eye! it suffocates them,then it will shrivel up and die,then you can pull it off with ease.be sure to grab its head(tick!) too.

I thought ticks were a bluey/greeny colour? Not sure though?

Make sure it really is a tick and not a skin tag.
I have seen tags that at first look appeared to be a tick, so would advise caution.

Daisy - can you use a magnifying lens, to make sure that it is a tick?  If not, I think I would be making an appt with the vet so that s/he could check it out.

Only last week sadie had a tick above her eye,it was quite big and pink,i wasnt sure if it was a skin tag at first ,so i just put vasaline on it after a day it was still there so i made a appt with mr vet man,half an hour later it had gone thank goodness sadie was releived as it was really irratating her,later that night i noticed that our young lab was looking at something on the rug,yes it was the tick crawling about,how horrible.

Vile things. Have had to pull them off the horses before. Had to kind of unwind one anti clockwise and it was still wriggling. I stamped it into tick dust :D

Have had it checked out at training class tonight :) Definitely a tick - it appeared too suddenly to be a skin tag, particularly as it is near the corner of the eye. Have smothered it several times with Vaseline and I've been told that it will probably take several days to die....... :D Also advised to leave it where it is and not to try to remove it.

Stamped it into "tick dust" - almost sounds cute :D :D :D   Had to be a starved one then - would have been "tick blobs" otherwise that's made me feel all squeamish again :(

what about, if the tick has already come off and left legs in?  I think that Tess might have one, there's a little red lump on her tummy, and I know that she's had these before, I can only think that that is what it is..... Is there a way of removing these?  Or is a visit to the vets in order?

If the legs are left in dont worry, it will scab over and the legs will come off when the scab falls off - I have left the legs in untold times :rolleyes:

Thanks ClaireyS, she's had them before on her tum and knocked them off herself, but this one seemed particularly bigger than before.  I'll keep and eye on it - thanks for the info. though - appreciated :)

Sam had a tick close to his eye and I did the vaseline trick which I've done before,it fell off so I thought great but the head was left in. I left it for about a month and it was still there so he had to have a little op to remove it. I've bought a green plastic tick remover from the vets for future use.

Urrrrgh!!! And me, in my fragile state!! Tick blob on my shoe...urrrgh!

My poor boy had one on his nose on Wednesday morning. It was only tiny so I put a bit of vaseline on it. However, I couldn't look at the nasty little thing any longer (tick not dog !) so popped him up to the vets where the receptionist took it off with her green tweezer things in about 10 seconds !.

ALso if anyone wants for furture referance unless it's on the eye then I wouldn't advise the following but covering the tick with hairspray works.  At a show recently we ended up with 3 ticks on two of the 3 dogs, no-one had any tweesers or anything else sutible bu good old me had hairspray in my bag.  Used this and the ticks fell off.  As it was at a show, just made sure it was all brushed out before entry into the ring and the show manager was aware what we had used and why!

EEW I had heard that there were a lot of ticks about but have been lucky enough never to find one on my dogs EEW EEW.

After a holiday in Scotland and my collies getting ticks, I got a little plastic instrument which gets the ticks of safely in one piece, simply slides around the tick and you turn gently and it pops out. Have them at vets and I've noticed them now being sold at Pets at home for around a £1
Being of the squeamish persuasion these are great cos within seconds you can just get rid.
Not necessarily advising this for around the eye as its so sensitive and the dog needs to remain still. Your call

Tara's tick died and came off yesterday :D Talking to someone at agility last night, they had been given a tick remover by their vet. They used it to remove the tick and must have left some of the tick behind because it became infected - so the vet had to prescribe steroid (?) cream. The vet wins both ways - selling the tick remover and then the cream because it didn't work :D

Best way to remove a tick is to "unwind" it anti-clockwise as someone else said. Never fails!
