Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Which show?
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 02.06.05 19:16 UTC
Hi everyone, i was wondering what show to enter first when Nina turns six months in July, we're both beginners so i'm not sure what to do.  I was looking in dog world today, do they list all the coming shows or just a few?

Warm regards Susan.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.06.05 19:22 UTC
Susan, if you say whereabouts you are roughly, somone may be able to let you know how to get hold of more show schedules :) Do you attend a ringcraft class? They often have local shows schedules
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 02.06.05 19:39 UTC
Thanks Mel i do attend ringcraft, i'm from Liverpool?

Warm regards Susan

I would say start with a couple of Open Shows before taking on a Championship show.  My first 2 shows (4 years ago) were Champ shows and boy was that overwhelming!!  Hindsight is 20/20 LOL.

You could also look for the Companion Dog Shows which will have pedigree classes, and you can enter on the day.  Really good practise for novices and a fun day out as well.

I've just been ever so stupid i've just entered Leeds Ch show, now i'm panicking.  I would'nt mind i dont even know what the classes are, here they are:PB,JB,PGB,LB,OB,MPB,PasTH,PPjstp,PPjstb and ATwkgg.

Warm regards Susan.
- By husky [gb] Date 02.06.05 21:41 UTC
You didn't enter ALL those classes did you!!!
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 02.06.05 21:42 UTC
Yes and now i'm having a panic attack, can you explain them?

Warm regards Susan
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.06.05 21:54 UTC
The explainations of the classes are on the schedule :) You should be entering a puppy bitch/dog class ... :) Ring the show secertary and explain :)
- By Moonmaiden Date 02.06.05 22:11 UTC
The Show Secretary will not know you have entered yet so better to ring Higham Press & speak to them I did with a problem with a Fosse dara entry & they sorted it out

You will need the entry number from the E mail & payment screen

Hi Susan,

normally you would enter only one class in a Champ show, and maybe a stakes class. If your puppy won Minor puppy for instance, and then got beaten in any other class, then she can't go in the line up for the CC. You have her in Minor puppy bitch, puppy bitch, junior bitch, post graduate bitch, limit bitch and open bitch. Also a lot of stakes classes, which I can't work out exactly what they are, but usually get entries of about 80! At least everyone will know you are new, it's a dead giveaway entering every class in sight! Personally I would show her in Minor Puppy and Puppy then withdraw her from the rest, as you will find that this is quite tiring for her, and not fair to put her in with the older bitches. Possibly do a stakes class if she looks up to it. What breed is she? Have a nice day out anyway!

Incidentally, can anyone tell me, if someone did this and their pup won both puppy classes and then they withdrew, would they still be eligible for best puppy? Just occured to me as I wrote it! I expect not?
- By Moonmaiden Date 02.06.05 22:00 UTC
As a Show Secretary the answer is No A puppy can only be withdrawn from the AV puppy classes & stakes not the breed classes-but the ring steward & secretary must be informed
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.06.05 22:02 UTC
I wouldn't normally enter more than 3 classes.  Depending on how popular your breed is this would be say the lowest breed class and maybe the next one if she is close to going up into that class, to test the water so to speak.  I would enter one stakes class, or possibly two with an older pup who is nearly a Junior.

Many people enter only one class.

Kennel Club rules do not allow you to withdraw from breed classes, so now you have entered you will have to go in them all.

Your pup will probably be outclassed in any class above Junior, or in a numerically large breed even before, but never mind.

Get the Leeds schedule out and read the class definitions they will explain exactly what each class means.  Briefly MPB would be minor Puppy bitch 6 to 9 months, PB, puppy bitch 6 to 12 months, JB, Junior bitch 6 to 18 months.  After age classes the classes are based on how much a dog has won.  OB is Open bitch this will have the Champions and dogs that have won out of the earlier classes.

If you don't place in the higher classes don't be surprised as the other exhibits will be more mature and expereinced.

It is possible but unusual for an outstanding youngster to go all the way and win several classes and best oif sex.  When my Jozi was in Junior at our club show (where entering numerous classes is done more as they put on extra classes to the normal ones) I won all five classes I had her in and then the CC, but this would not be usual, and she was particularly mature.  Her daughter has just had her first CC and isn't as mature at the same age.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.06.05 22:03 UTC
After your first breed class with each next class you will stand in the corner as a seen dog until all the others have been seen and lien up again at the end.  Take the opportuity to relax your dog, as otherwise she will get very bored.
- By Moonmaiden Date 02.06.05 21:54 UTC
Edited to add OMG why ? One or two but all of them ?? I would contact them tomorrow & get them to take your bitch out of at least the non  restricted age classes I think you will find they should be able to do it especially if you explain that you are new

Puppy Bitch
Junior Bitch
Post Graduate Bitch
Limit Bitch
Open Bitch
Pets As Therapy Stakes
PetPlan Junior stakes
The rest pass

I know it's stupid but i entered on line, and i couldn't even understand the abbrievations and i dont have a schedule, do you think if i phone tomorrow they will cancel a few?  please help moonmaiden and brainless i'm going to have a heart attack in the morning.  If they do cancel a few what should i take her in, it's far to much for her she will switch off in the corner and i dont wont her to have a bad experience.  I suppose you learn by mistakes air head seems to spring to mind though.  They will realise i'm a novice at showing wont they, why do they say though that the only classes that you can enter will come up on line?  It took me an hour when i was filling in the application form as i had to refer to my showing book which didn't even have those abbrievations in.

Warm regards Susan

Yopu can download and vierw the schedule for Leeds.  I would save and print it so that you know what ti is that you really want to enter and also for future reference. :D

What breed are you?

If it is a less popular breed then I woudl enter both puppy classes in the breed and the puppy stakes.  Otherwise one puppy classs the minor puppy, and the puppy stakes for the experience practice (and less nerve wracking with all theother breeds than in the bred ring in my opinion).
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 03.06.05 00:41 UTC
I have a bullmastiff but i dont know if they are poppular, what do you think?  i've just emailed dog.biz to see if i can drop some of the classes, i'll have to phone tomorrow.

Warm regards Susan.

Hi Susan, have you spoken to your breeder ? my breeder has been excellent in guiding me in which classes to enter.  In my breed (very popular  ) we only generally enter minor puppy (which is under 9 months) and then when the pup is about 8 months we start enterting puppy too, basically to put a 6 month old of a my breed into puppy wouldnt be worth it because they look so immature compared to the pups which are only a few months older than them.  I would definitely speak to your breeder or someone in you breed who has experience of showing to guide you.

Good luck ( and dont worry, we all make mistakes - me especially :) )
- By Moonmaiden Date 03.06.05 08:47 UTC
As entries close today I'm sure higham press will help you you can confirm by e mail as well If you tell them that you are new & didn't understand the entry system. I had a real problem with my Blackpool entries & the lady at Fosse Data couldn't have been more helpful. The E mail confirms that you are you of course

No point in bothering the secretary as she wouldn't even know you are entered yet as everything is processed by Higham press

LOL you had me pannicking as I couldn't remember entering but found the e mail phew panic over

Warm regards Susan

That's good then, at least its all sorted out now and don't worry, we ALL make mistakes when we first start out.....and even sometimes still do :D
Good Luck at Leeds

OOH, he did me and Diane(his breeder) very proud by getting 2nd out of 11 in the NSC Gundog Puppy class :D You can imagine the grin...which still appears when I look at the rosette!!!
We are off to another little open tomorrow so we'll see how he goes, Diane said we both looked like pros on Wednesday all the ringcrafting etc really does pay off in the end, so keep at it :)

Can anyone tell me how much the puppy stakes classes normally are, are they the same cost as the first entry i.e. £21 for Birmingham , i cant seem to find out on the schedule the price of the puppy stakes classes and i am about to fill in the schedule.  It does say all other entries for same dog £3 (i think) will this apply to the puppy stakes class?
