Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Anti bark collars will they
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 02.06.05 13:50 UTC
Hello

Im thinking of getting an anto bark collar for my Rosie, she has started barking alot when she is playing with the other dogs in the garden and all though we tell her no and bring her inside once let out the cycle continues.

We have dont want to upset the negihbour with the nosie although we havent yet had any complaints, we always tell them to let us know if the dogs make too much noise, but Im still worried.

This may sound like a daft question but with the sonic collars will it only work if she barks? It will not pick up the other dogs barking (if they do) and emit a sound will it?

Hope that makes sense :)

I have heard that other dogs barking can set those collars off :(

I just suddenly thought what if they pick up our other dogs barking  and poor Rosie gets sonicked!

Oh so that wouldnt be a good idea then...hmm, back to the drawing board then!

You can get a citronella master pluss coller that is triggered by a remote control, so if your dog is outside you can sit in the lounge and press the remote when your dog barks, this way she will not associate the squirt with you.

It might work if you keep her on a long line and mark her barking with an "ah!" and bring her in...if however she loves to be indoors she will not mind :D

Keep her in for a few minutes and let her out. You may need to repeat it a lot and barking may get worse before it gets better and you do need to be totally consistent. If it is working you should see a difference within a week :).

Look at this site...

http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/erol.html#278x0&&http%3A%252F%252Fwww.google.co.uk%252Fsearch%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dmasterplus+collers%26meta%3Dcr%253DcountryUK%257CcountryGB

The Masterplus is best imo a bit more expensive but can be triggered from a further distance, the spray commander (also on site) is cheaper but less distance and also are not too well made in my experience. I bought one and it was replaced 4 times before I finally asked for my money back and the store selling them had also said they have had a number of returns on them. So in the end I got a masterplus which has lasted a year now and still going strong, the remote has also survived a chewing from my dog!

Hi Blondiflops Yes a normal anit bark collar will be set off by another dog barking. Also Im a bit concerned that your dog will get the message not to play rather than not to bark, which could confuse the poor thing. If they are in close proximity playing the other dog will quite possibly also get a good squirt as well!

I'll set the scene for you and hopefully someone will be able to advise me what to do.

Ronnie has a toy, Rosie will bark bark bark bark bark, because she wants it...she wont try and take it from him she just stands and looks at him and barks

Lisa calls Rosie inside, closes her mouth and says no, I take toy away from Ron.

Maybe I will just have to take their toys away :( :( :( but that doesnt sound like fun :( and its not fair on the other dogs as they are playing nicely.

any help Im sure will be greatly appreciated by my neighbours!

Thats exactly what my boys do, Fagan has a toy and instead of taking it off him Alfie just barks and barks at him it all usually ends with me shouting and Alfie getting shut in the kitchen for a two minute cool down - hasnt solved it though :D :D

Blondiflops I assume that there are plenty of toys to play with but Rosie always wants the one that Ronnie has?!

I would say that barking is her way of saying 'come on play with me' and is probably accompanied by play bowing? She wants to either chase him or be chased by him probably ending in a tug of war. Is it any toy or one or two in particular?

Personally I would try them with something like a bone each, since the toys are causing so much agro and Ronnie has clearly worked out how to wind Rosie up! I dont think that taking the toys away is SO bad, mine dont really have toys unless Im supervising, so long as they have something like a bone to occupy them rather than tunneling out of the garden!

Right idea Bluebell but wrong way round!!

Ronnie will take a toy and play bow and run around making nosies trying to get rose to chase him but she wont!!! She just stands and barks at him!?!?!?!? Doesnt make any sense to me!

If I give Ron and bone and then rose she will drop hers and stand next to him barking because she wants his one ??!?! SO i have to take rons off him and give it too her and vice versa.

I now have had to put them in different rooms if they have bones because once ROn has finished his he will go and relieve Rosie of hers! I take it off him and give it back to her because she barks and the cycle yet again continues!
They are like kids they want what the other has got!!
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 03.06.05 12:43 UTC
LOL Sounds like Ronnie is top dog and Rosie is not sure if it is OK to play with him! As for him getting both bones, we had that and Truffle soon learned that if she wanted it she had to keep it away from Hook. First few times I didnt return it to her she came and looked at me, when I did nothing she started to learn that it was up to her. HOWEVER she didnt bark constaintly at Hook (thank god). But sorry to say Im not sure that you are making it any better by intervening, infact you could be teaching her that if she barks enough she gets waht she wants :(

If anything I would carry on seperating them when she starts barking but the barking in itself can trigger hormones in the dog brain that can act like an adrenaline rush. If Rosie has got to liking this it may be a long up hill battle!
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 03.06.05 12:52 UTC
Ron is definately top dog!

The two girls just follow him around like two love struck teenagers! :)

Bit of a tricky one isnt it! I think Rosie might be a tad hormonal at the moment thats why she might be abit vocal at the moment, I'll just persevere with seperating them and bringing her in when she barks and hopefully she will notice whats happening and clock on!

Thanks for the advice....Truffles what a great name! I love it ha! :D

Barking sounds a strange way of flirting! I have to say that Truff is my first bitch and I would never have believed that a dog could get PMS - until it happened! And well truff is a chockie lab and I have met SO many called mars, snicker, bourneville etc!

Keep up the reffereing job and good luck.
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 03.06.05 13:13 UTC
Oh I have living proof of dog with PMS!

She feels very sorry for herself and has a real strope, maybe its because we have just got another bitch and rose now has to fight for his attention!

Chockie labs are gorgeous, a friend of mine has one and she is a real bundle of fun!

Thanks for the advice

"Lisa calls Rosie inside, closes her mouth and says no, I take toy away from Ron."

Unfortunately all you are teaching her when you do this is that when she comes in (like she's been asked) she gets told off.  You need to correct the barking WHEN she's barking, not when she's obeyed a different command.

The remote citronella collar 'could' work in this situation, but I wouldn't use the bark version.
