Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how long should I wait?
- By krankypuss [au] Date 01.06.05 20:48 UTC
Kirra is at day 66 now. I have never had a pregnancy go so long. Usually they go around the 59-63 mark. Kirra is not distressed. Of course she is tired and laying around a bit. I was going to take her to the vet today if nothing had happened but I am unsure wheather to just wait and see for a few more days. I am a little worried that the pups will grow too big and she might have problems with delivery. I have noticed a definate change in her shape this morning and she seems a lot more full from even last night.
Does anyone have any suggestions? She is a maiden bitch.

Thanks

I would definitely ring your Vet's and discuss the situation.

How long is it since her last mating and what days was she mated?

I'd take her to the vets in the morning, I know that my vet didn't used to worry about them being late, but she is quite a few days past now isn't she?  Have you felt any movement from the pups of late?

The pups are very active. Extremely actually. She is very restless this afternoon, a little bit of panting, nothing much, could be that she is fat and finding herself uncomfortable? Hoping it may turn into something more than that though. Fingers crossed. I have decided that if nothing occurs tonight, I will take her to vets tomorrow morning.

She has got a lot bigger in the past 24 hours, a lot more solid. Her teats are bulging. I feel so sorry for my poor little girl. We are both expecting so it is uncomfortable for both of us I guess...lol

Thanks for the replies

I think it might have begun.. for the past half hour Kirra has been panting hard. She still looks ok and is not distressed, but the panting is there. I am getting excited. Looks like I am in for a long night..

Wish us luck!!

im confused..Kirra panted for about 20 mins after I posted then stopped. I checked that she wasnt pushing or anything like that. I called the vet and he said to keep an eye on her, but he felt she was fine for now although he wants to see her tomorrow afternoon if she has not whelped.

I do have a question though. She has since been drinking a lot of water. She doesnt usually drink that much but has been tonight? am I looking for too many signs? or does this mean something?
thanks

They do pant for a while, then settle down in a deep sleep, then start again an hour or so later.  Just keep a very close eye on her, watch for signs of contractions or any signs of discharge, but it sounds like she is in the very early stages of labour.

Good luck

Anyting happened?
- By krankypuss [au] Date 03.06.05 20:14 UTC
Nothing has happened yet spanishwaterdog. I took her to the vet yesterday and he wants to leave her until monday( is now sat morning the 4th here in Austalia) and if nothing has happened they will intervene.

It is worrying, but like the vet said she is healthy, not in any way distressed and the pups are not overly big, so he said he is not that concerned yet.
So fingers crossed she will go herself over the weekend
