I found a dog trainer for my pup to star 'school' in a couple of weeks. The lady charges £50 for 6 weeks at 1 45min session each week. This is an intense course (whatever that means). Some ideas to wether this seems a lot of money. When i used to go with a friend the class she went to was £3 membership per year and £1.50 for an hour session.Unfortunately this lady is full and wont be taking new ones for about 6 months. I cant wait much longer. What do you think?

Hmm, well tell me where else can you get any sort of good training for less than the minimum wage per hour?

Why would you expect it to be ridiculously cheap.

Generally one gets what one is prepared to pay for.  Have you attended a session to see if you like her methods?

Does she come highly recommended (look at the dogs, don't ask the owners) :D

I never thought about it like that. This lady is adpt, and i watched her with her class of 6 dogs by the roadside. (they were outside). I think your right tohme that she is training the owners as i was listening to her setting individual tasks, observing and then telling the owner where they went wrong or what they did right. It just seemed like a lot when she said it. I did mean one 45 min session a week, sorry i didnt make that clear. Thanks for the response i am booking him in now.

An hour and 45 minutes sounds like a very long time to be training, are you sure you, AND YOUR PUP won't get tired - a tired pup won't learn anything.......

Surely classes are for teaching the owner how to train the dog and dogs may be worked individually.

Hi stann

I think, like many things, it depends on the area of the country you are talking about.  The behaviourist (APDT member) I have worked for charges £48 for an 8 week course of 1hr weekly lessons.  Maximum number per class is 8 and there are often 2 APDT members training together, especially the beginners.

Julie

ps Digger.  I think stann means one 45min session.

Someone who asks for £1.50 is more likely to cram dogs in and you are more likely to end up with a very stressed out pup who has learnt to be defensive or to push others around as a crowded class can be disaster. A good class is more likely to have a set number of sessions planned and will be able to give more individual attention. I would personally plump for the 8 week course :)

Sounds about right to me. Around here it is anything upto £40 per hour for a private lesson/assessment. But like the others have said you do tend to get what you pay for.
