Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Can you freeze raw veg???
- By mackleback Date 01.06.05 12:57 UTC
Hi. I am going on holiday in July and have to put my pup into boarding kennels. :-( He is on a raw food diet and the kennels will let me bag up his food and give it to them. I was just wondering if i can freeze raw veg??? I put it in a food processor to chop it finely first. Is this ok to freeze, or do i have to do something to it first??? Any advise welcome because i want him to have the same food when he is in the kennels. I am already feeling bad about leaving him! :-(
Thanks in advance.

You CAN freeze raw veggies - they don't last quite so well as those that are blanched (dropped in boiling water, held at boiling for 1 min, then dropped into iced water for 5mins) - but you do that if you are freezing a glut for use 6-8 months ahead.  However, as you are pulping them first, and its only for 2 weeks, should be fine - they won't spoil!

Yep you can freeze raw veg, however i read not too long ago that it is not advisable as freezing may kill some of the nutrients,i cant bloody remember where i read it

Having said this,i freeze my dogs veg regularly,i make up a weeks worth, then spoon it into icecube trays,so when feeding time rolls around all i have to do is pop a cube out and  let defrost :)

I'll find where i read this and let you know :)

If you freeze you won't need to pulp as freezing serves the same purpose, ie breaks down cell walls.

TBH he can go without veggies for a week or two with no harm.  I don't bother to send veggies to the kennels when I kennel mine.

In my experience Tohme freezing doesnt break the cell walls down enough,if you froze a whole carrot and then chopped it up into large chunks and gave it to your dog you would no doubt see whole chunks come out the other end.I know i've tested this theory out, this is the ONLY time i have seen such obvious undigested matter in my dogs poop.

However you are right in saying that OP could forgo the veggies for a couple of weeks, macklebackit wont hurt if your dog doesnt get his vegies for wee while :)

Your are quite right Frodo, it never occurred to me that anyone would actually freeze whole vegetables

OP you can freezing grated etc veggies will do the same as pulping.
