Does any one know what a Teckel is ?

A Badger I think, because a teckel hund is a Dachshund.

It is the German word for Dachsund, the european type appear (and often are) higher on leg than those in UK as they are not as deep in keel.  I much prefer the Continental type myself, and especially the Wire haired.  they are still very much used for hunting so are of a fitter less exagerated type.

Here is a website for the American club for this workign type dachs.

I found a reference to them being bred for following wounded deer, another to them be able to keep up with the dogs on the beating line and Dachshunds, I didn't think that sounded much like a modern Dachsund, can't find any pictures of them though.

I love the site name, read it as tinklewinkie :P  No photos and not written in English, but if you go to the sales site with car stickers, you will see how they look,

Wire haired working dachsund, often used by deer stalkers to find deer after they have been shot and fallen in undergrowth. There is a UK teckle society and even a teckle show held at the deer fair each year. There is a working  pack based in Herefordshire. If you go to any game fairs you can see many as they are quite popular working dogs now and such characters!!

they are used a lot for Wild Boar in Poland where I was staying at a Hunting Lodge the most charming bitch was there with her owner.  I notice even in the UK the Wire haored standard dachs are not so large and seem more athletic than the others.

I do like them with some legs though, they are really nice characters :D

Very popular as pets in flats in Poland where the logner legs and slightly shorter backs cause them less problems.

There is a UK society and breed registry :

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/sunsong/UK%20Teckel/ukteckel.htm#info

The registry permits the use of dachshunds (and to a lesser extent other breeds) in the breeding programmes.

Some friends have a wire-haired teckel. She is a great character and fits in well with a mixed group of springers and labs. As a breed they seem a good alternative to a working type terrier as a pet/worker. They have apparantly been used for a variety of sporting purposes, although in the UK, most seem to be used for trailing deer.

Obedience seems to be a bit 'hit and miss'. Getting them to come back in 'gamey' areas can be a little problematic! ;-)
