between scanning and xray?
X-rays show dense tissue such as bones
Scans generally show soft tissue such as organs

Do most vets offer both? We were given just the xray option from ours. If not, where can I get a scan or would you just recomend the xray?, sounds like the better choice.
Thanks.

I wouldn't want to xray an inwhelp bitch.

most people we have talked with including our vet say to have the xray to be sure she is pregnant.
Is there really a concern with this. She is due to deliver, if she is pregnant, in about 4 days.

why the need to xray or scan if she is due in 4 days ???? she should at least look pregnant by now surely ?? i would only ever advise someone to xray a inwhelp bitch if there are problems but it is not commonly done (where i am) a vet should be able to feel the whelps and you should certainly see them moving - also nipples should be large. xrays shouldn't be taken without an anesthetic as health and safety advises not to manually restrain animals and an anesthetic is unthinkable at this time - why is your vet telling you to xray??
a scan would be much safer for the bitch and puppies but most vets don't have one as they can cost up to £10k, a hospital is more likely to own one try ringing around if it is really necessary to know - I would just wait and see if it was me !! good luck

thanks, the concern is that she does'nt really look pregnant! She is lactating, tired and somewhat poofey, but no real big change around her tummy. I guess we are all just a little impatient.

phantom pregnancy ??????? when did you mate her and was it intentional ? what breed is she ?? how old and how many seasons has she had? were they normal ? they can hold puppies high up, maybe she is only going to have one or two ? has a vet had a feel, if they had felt between 25-27 days he would have felt small round lumps often described as beads on a necklace ? this late on i'm sure they don't want to prode or poke too much, and vets can get it wrong !

Hi Brad, scans aren't that helpful so late in pregancy, and with 4 days to go an X-ray can't do the pups any harm as long as the vet is happy to X-ray her without an anaesthetic. I wouldn't be keen on an anaesthetic or even deep sedation unless there was a very pressing reason for it. What breed is she? Some of the bigger breeds 'show' very little. If she is lactating however, I'd guess that you've got a phantom :-(

Xrays for in whelp bitches in the Uk do not seem to be recomended, but very common in USA. Xrays involve radiation, and scanning sound waves as far as I understand it!

also i dont think the scan can be 100%, whereas later if you xray you can count the body's. spines etc show clearly
