Hiya Everyone, advise would very much appriciated! PLEASE
my little girl is now on day 63(from 1st mating) and i am getting evermore stressed!
over the past 3 days there has been lots of digging, nesting up in her whelping box. BUT whats worring me is the fact that she hardly eaten now for 3 days, only picking when offererd food by hand. her belly has dropped to the floor (literaly) and she is now losing stringy clear mucus, she is on 1 hand very restless, but then seems to drift into very sleepy mode,
she is very lively within herself, and still gets very exited and is full of life whenever i approach her. there has been no panting yet and i cannot express any milk from her, although i know that she my well produce milk after she has started whelping.
Am i worring over nothing/has anyone experienced these signs?
kind regards
mark

my bitch is on day 63 and i think now starting as her temp has gone very low and has just started panting, but up untill this morning when she refused food completly she has been very picky and only eating the really nice bits such as her scambled egg or her meat since thursday last week, like inca says she may have taken from the second mating as long as she doesn't seem stressed try not too worry to much, good luck.

On another thread she went in to have a csection. That was about 4pm. So hopefully mum and pups are doing well.
Mark any news?????
thanks lea i have just seen that one after i had posted, i do hope all is well.
hiya all,
i'm devistated, she was carrying an emormous litter, 11 in total. the first puppy was well and truely stuck, she's had the c-section and she's doing great, unfortunately, she lost 9 puppies and i was infomed that 1 of the 2 remaining puppies was weak. but mom has mothered them instantly, which was a big relief, so puppies are staying in with mommy tonight, i phoned the vet at 9-15 this evening and he told me that weak puppy is holding on in there and mom is giving her special attention and she has in fact latched onto mom for some 15 mins....lol
i cannot put into words what my feelings are at the moment, but i would like to wish everyone who is expecting all the best.
i'm now looking forward to tomorrow to get all 3 home.
thank you once again for all you thoughts
kindest regards mark

Hi Mark,
Have only just seen your update and I'm so sorry that your poor girl has had to go through so much - and you too of course :( On the plus side, she will not know that she has lost so many babies and God willing you will get her and the 2 surviving ones home safe and strong and she'll be a contented little mum.
Best wishes to all - they're very precious aren't they ;) and Im sure it's a HUGE relief under the circumstances that you're dear girl is OK.
Teri :)

I am so sorry Mark. :( Fingers crossed the two remaining pups will do well.

So sorry about you losing so many pups, its so sad, but hope the remaining two are ok and getting stronger, also poor mum of course. Have you got them home now?.
Hi Mark
I know that you are really busy right now but how are things?
So sorry to hear about the 9 pups you lost, that is tragic :-( but at least you acted quickly and saved Mum and 2 puppies. Good luck with them and keep us updated on their progree. All the best and big hugs.xxx
hiya all, thank you so much for your thoughts they really do help!
anyway here's the update,
after posting last night i felt it was my chance to catch up on some sleep has i've hardly had any for a week, thinking my babies was in good hands . so come 9-30pm i was tucked up like a little kitten snoring my head off...lol BUT at 10-55 last night my dear wife woke me up and after me gathering my surrounding's i realised she was telling me that the vet had just phoned,( to say my heart was on the matress would be an understatement ). I was relayed the message that, would it be possible to get to the vets and collect the 2 remaining puppies has the anesthetic had knocked them both back, and mommy wasn't having much to do with them at all.
i got to the vets at 11-30 and after some delay asked how mom was doing only was told by some little upstart that " HOW WOULD YOU BE FEELING IF YOU'D HAD JUST BEEN THROUGH WHAT SHE HAD BEEN THROUGH" and "I NEED TO BOTTLE FEED THE PUPPIES BECAUSE HE DID'NT HAVE THE TIME TO DO IT" this was not what i was expecting. and after i had put him in his place and got back in my car with mom and 2 puppies i went home explaining to him that i would take care of them myself and bottle feed the puppies, he them jumped in with "THEY WON'T SURVIVE BEING BOTTLE FEED"
All last night was a real struggle has both of the puppies had really bad rattles, wimpering and felt cold by touch. I did manage to get feeds into them although not vast amounts(USING A DROPLET), and maintain a good temperature, mom settled down very sleepy- this morning came and what a turnaround,i pup the 2 little ones back with mom, and after some strange head movements shereally does adore them both and 2 little ones are now latching on great. there's no more rattles or wimpering and they are holding temp, and feeding regularly.( the only crying they both do now is if they fall off the teat...lol)
so fingers crossed the progress continues.
The only worry i have at the moment is the fact that i haven't seen any poo from the babies of yet, last night i was tickling them with damp cotton buds but could only get them to wee, i really don't know if mom has done the poo poo bit, because i've given them all some time out from everyone so they can bond even more, only popping into them every 1/2 or so. could anyone recommend anything for me to do, other than keeping a close eye on them.. ?
has for that little upstart, i have phoned my vet who has tryed to calm me down over the phone, but i'm having non of that, and i have demanded an oppointment with him tomorrow.
kindest regards
mark

I am so glad the puppies are doing well now and the mum seems settled. I wonder though if your tiredness is making you see this a little grumpier than you might otherwise :). It is quite unusual not to take the mum and pups homes very soon after the section and carry on with things yourself so I think you have been quite fortunate to get a nap at that stage. I can well imagine they don't have time to bottle feed at a busy surgery so the best thing was for you to take over although perhaps they could have been a bit more encouraging as to getting them back onto the dam.
As far as the toileting, you do need to watch mum and pups, personally I do not leave mine alone at all for the first week or two to ensure all is well, you would usually expect her to wash and stimulate their bladders and bowels immediately following a feed. I suspect she is doing it though as they are now appearing contented and heres hoping its a smooth run from now on :)
Is this the new thing for vets??? When one of my girls had a CS some 6 years ago, I stayed in the waiting room, the pups were brought to me straight away to bring them round and then the vet and I sat in the waiting room, which was of course empty as it was after the clinics and waited until mum was back in the world of the living so to speak.
Yours is the second experience like this that I've heard in the last 2 weeks. My friends dog had a CS 2 weeks ago resulting in 8 live pups she was told to take the pups home and leave the mother there which she did. She was also told when she got the mother that they doubted that all the pups would survive because the mother had no milk and she would have to bottle feed. I wonder how much vets know about breeding, most bitches don't get the milk in until the pups start to suckle.
Two weeks later she still has 8 live pups that were suckling properly within 2 hours.
I don't blame you being annoyed Mark and it's about time that people stood up to vets instead of us always treating them like Gods. I'm actually very friendly with mine so I can't call him:d Hope all goes well with mum and babes. Got everything crossed.

I got the impression from Marks post he did not think the vets kept them long enough! I also read it as the vets advising that they needed bottle feeding at that point but they would not survive if that was the long term strategy.
I could be very wrong :) but I felt the only thing the vets did wrong was a failing on the empathy side but as Marks whole post, to me, reads like a man who had been through a terrible experience, was absolutely shattered and felt like striking out over what he perceived as an attitude thing, he may not have been the easiest man to advise at the time.
so sorry to here you lost 9pups but atleast you still have 2 healthy pups and a live mum.heres hopeing they pull through. keep us updated and as for your vet you have everyright to be annoyed with him i would 0f been.fair enough they was busy but there was no need for the way they treated you! goodluck with mum and pups! :)
God, you aint had it easy have you? Lets hope this is the turn-a-round point and that all will be fine now. Sounds like mum is a star, keep a close eye on them. Well done Mark you are doing a great job, keep us posted ;-)
Keep up the good work mark. Its a worrying time enough, when things are going as they should but when all sorts of things seem to be going wrong, that's when your vets should be there to reassure you and hopefully help you in every possible way. My vets could'nt do enough to help when pepsi and puppies were ill, and to be honost, that is what they are paid to do. I would expect no less. If I was you I would complain too. It's sounds as though mum has bonded with pups and is doing a good job looking after them. Hopefully, like people are saying, this is your turning point and things can only get better. Good luck and stick at it mate!

Just read your thread and that must have been devestating for you.... Am very glad to hear that mom and the 2 are doing good :)
Best of luck
