we have a 2yo lurcher cross (prob greyhound and german shepard we think!) we have to leave him for 6hours a day during the week and he will not settle gets stressed and chews the carpet and sofa. otherwise he is a great dog, we have taken him to  training classes and he is very obidient and happy and loves us to bits. he has toys and treats and kong style toys when we are out but we cannot break this behavior. we thought maybe a companion might help him settle as he seems to be bored/stressed when he alone. he was a stray when found probably had been with travellers before that, then went to a diabled lady who couldn't cope with him, then into rescue kennels for 2 months and he has been  with us now for 3 1/2 months. in every other way he is a very happy dog and we dont know if another dog would be the solution? help please!

Getting another dog wouldn't be the best solution... more than likely the new dog will pick up the behaviours of the other dog and you'll be in the same situation but 2x worse.

Are you sure you're giving the dog enough physical and mental stimulation?

Why not try crating him for a few hours with a different toy everyday and maybe a bone? Obviously not for 6 hours though.

Could you not come home on your lunch break and take him out for a walk, or hire a dog-walker?
