Hi Welshie,

Perhaps you accidentally hurt her removing the hair and the poor wee pup just latched onto the wrong teat   but it's hard to tell without seeing everything that happened.    Had she been 100% with them until this incident?   My bitch (first litter for her and us) was a great Mum but I didn't leave her unattended with the pups EVER until they were mobile enough to move out of her way in case she accidently crushed any but of course she had an escape route from them long before that ;)
Believe me you may close your eyes and nap but you don't truly get a sleep for at least the first couple of weeks - you'll find your ears are naturally tuned into every squeak from them or groan from mum.  Stay very vigilant with her but try not to be too alarmed - hopefully this is just a one-off ;)  Get a baby monitor for when you have to leave them even just to go to the loo - they are worth their wait in gold because they give you peace of mind which is a luxury during the exhausting time ahead :P  Good luck, Teri

Hi Welshie,

If the puppies are not crying then they are getting enough milk. Her milk comes in by demand.  Just keep an eye on her. Has she had extra calcium etc?

She also needs a good diet, with plenty of protein, that will help her milk supply

She must feel awful she has terrible wind and her tummy is rumberling one good thing she,s drinking

If you supplement the pups you will actually interfere with her milk coming in as they need to suckle almost constantly for the first thre days (as in humans) to get the milk in.

Yes Brainless is right, dont supplement them yet unless they are constantly crying. It takes some time for the milk to come in and they must stimulate this by feeding regularly. You wont see much milk as they SHOULD be constantly taking it.
Make sure she is drinking lots, whelping de-hydrates them severely and then they have to produce lots of milk straight away so you need to keep her fluids right up.  Simmer a skinned chicken joint in  2-3 pints of water, cool, and give her as much as she wants to drink. All dogs love this with a passion and she will drink as much as she needs. At her next meal add the meat from the chicken joint to her regular meal. She should be offered a generous bowl of this broth 2 or 3 times a day, not too close to feeds. When offering water put a little (skimmed if you have it) milk into it to tempt her. Dont be tempted to fed her loads of food just yet, its fluids she needs. Once the pups are 72 hours old then you can start giving her higher protein.

I give my newly whelped bitches 60% cooked and de-boned chicken and 40% plain boiled rice with SA37 vit/min supplement 4 times a day. I might add a little grated cheese or an oz or two of baked liver in a couple of meals per day. Also if they like it I put a dribble of evaporated milk on top too - anything to get them started. Offer food and drinks in the the bed and take her out first so she is comfortable and able to enjoy her food. If any food drops in the bed pick it up straight away  if she doesn't.

To gauge the amount mine are eating 2 weeks after whelping: Each meal is about the same volume as the one normal days ration she would eat when not pregnant.  For one meal a day for the first week I give one or two scrambled eggs and half the amount of chicken. I dont keep on with this once the stools are firm and normal. Cooked eggs are good for the tum which can get loose after whelping. BY the time the pupus are establisghed at about 7 days - all fat, fine and healthy I start putting the mum back onto normal food. I use a complete food thats about 30% protein and 12% fats, soak it in chicken broth and also give a little cooked chicken to get their noses in - a couple of tablespoons for a large dog.

just to add, that you just give the vit/min supp once a day, the above  reads like i meant with every meal. sorry.
