Last year I took my golden retriever to the beach, the next day she came out in a rash with big red spots on her tummy, I took her to the vets and he gave her some antibiotics for 14 days which cleared it up, never to be seen again, until we went on holiday last week. We spent alot of time on the beach and hosed her down when we got back to the cottage. She now has this rash again, I've been cleaning the rash with mid solution of savlon and water this is working, should I take her back to the vets for more antibiotics or carry on with the savlon? Is it the sand or sea water thats doing this? does anyone else's dog have the same problem? She loves the beach so much!!!!!

hi lynn
we live in blackpool and we had a dog like that, the vet put it down to allergies. We just kept her off the beach she was fine

Be careful at the beach with your dogs feet if its a hot day,the sand can get really hot. It's also manifested with fleas.

I dare say it's the sand,i have heard time and again to keep allergic dogs away from sand as it flares up the itchies, however the sea water can be soothing/healing to rashes etc.
The sand aggravates one of my dogs, but she loves the beach more than the itchies bother her,so i just make sure to give her a nice warm bath when we get home :)
If your dog loves the beach and the rash doesnt bother her then i wouldnt stop taking her, just do as your already doing and give her a good rinse down afterwards :)
Many thanks for all of your replies, This was worrying me, I think I will take her to a pebble beach next time and see what happens. The rash doesn't bother her she doesn't lick or scratch it and it's not bleeding. It has all most gone now.
many thanks Lynn
HI, could it be hot spots? these can be caused by not drying a dog 100% after getting wet regardless of sea or fresh water. It can also show itself during times of stress ( ie going on holiday). Goldies are quite prone to them.
