Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 63 and still waiting!!
- By lilly01 [gb] Date 25.05.05 17:43 UTC
Dear All,

Here we are on day 63 and still waiting!! Sash has been dashing round the park like a mad thing, should I let her?? I only went for a short stroll but she shot off and had a great time, but I am a little concerned that she should be taking it easy, Just to clarify I did not have her on a lead as the park is next to my house (no roads just straight onto fields). should I have her walk on a lead now or leave it up to her to decide how much to do??

Thanks
lilly

my girl has a week to go and has already decided to retire from anything that means moving at all :)

They are funny arn't they????????

She is fast asleep now without a care in the world, while I look for signs at every twitch!!

HI :-) If she still hasn't started having her pups yet I would definately only take her out on the lead from now on, I dont think she should really be dashing about. ;-) If you are certain of her dates, watch that she doesn't start digging holes while she is outside, she will get filthy and may not settle where you want her to, to have her pups, if she has already started making her own nest.
Good luck with the pups

Morning All,

Still nothing!! Lots of diging last evening and licking her nether regions then settled down and slept all night.

Morning All,

Well another quiet night, how long should I leave her over her due date?? With a long weekend coming up I wondered if I should get her checked over either today or tomorrow, or am I worrying to soon??

Try not to worry, she may not have conceived until up to 72 hours after the mating and if she had two matings and conceived late to the second one you could wait a day or three yet. As long as she is bright and waggy and eating a bit, with no coloured discharge, all is almost certainly ok. The last thing I would do for the next 48 hours or so is put her in the car and take her to the vets for a check up unless you have good reason ( except that she is late for dates). Do ring them though and speak to your vet and let them know she is late for dates. Its not that uncommon for bitches to go 66/67 days. I had a litter 8 days late once and quite a few at 64/65 days from one mating ( so I KNOW how late they were).

Obviously you must follow your instincts and if you really want to take her for a check up, then do. But take a lined box with HW Bottle and your whelping kit with you if you do go.

Its the same as us, my doctor told me I was due to have my first baby on Christmas Eve and by middle of January he was beside himself as he wanted me to be induced.  But I was fine, the baby was fine and beligerant as ever I wouldn't let them do anything. Son was duly born on Jan 30th , 5 weeks "late",  fine and healthy and although was over a month late as far as the doctors were concerned he was a perfect full term baby and actually not overdue at all!!!! If they had delivered him by "date" he would have been 5 weeks early and as he only weighed 6lbs would have been a tiny tot and would maybe have been compromised. This was a long time ago before scans were as acurate as they are these days.

Keep us posted. :-)

Hi,

Thanks for that you have confirmed my thoughts. I will leave her, she is happy and only slightly off food no coloured discharge and no pain. Last time she was a day or two early, these girls!!!

Thanks for your support

If it helps we've just today delivered a litter of 3 dog pups all 7oz fit and healthy 4 days past her due date she obviously ovulated after her last mating but still conceived an average litter for our breed.

Hi Schip,

That makes me feel better as we are still hanging on here!!! Sasha is very perky and still eating alough not with her usual Lab gusto, lots of digging still but nothing else. My nerves are being streched to the limits though.

Dear All,

Just been for a stroll and sasha had some clear stringy mucus after a wee, so I hope thats a sign things are moving. She has been uncomfortable at times this morning, so fingers crossed!!!

Hope all goes well.  However are you not worried taking her off the premises as she is in whelp.  My bitches never come off my premises from about the last two weeks of their pregnancy.  Am worried that they might catch something.  They have the run of the garden and house.  Then when the pups are born they stay confined until the puppies are weaned. Still within the confines of house and garden.  They dont appreciate it I have to say but better to be safe than sorry.  Just my opinion.  Good luck with the litter.

As long as the bitch is up to date with her jabs all should be well. After all, you're as likely to bring back bugs to the pups when you go out of the house as she is! ;)

Mine go out for walks up until they start whelping, and afterwards get taken off the premises for walks when they want to - usually on about day 4. I haven't had a sick puppy or lost one yet ... !

Hi Molly 1,

I have always strolled round the park next to my house with her and I was told by the vet to keep her going out and the park would be fine, It never crossed my mind she could catch anything! She is fully vaccinated and I am not even sure what she could catch walking alongside me? I don't let her swim, eat any unmentionables etc for that reason but walking in what is almost an extension to our garden I never even gave it a thought. I would not take her anywhere in the car at this time though.

Last time she was out and about locally within a few days just for 5mins at a time and really enjoyed the change of scene, but I always washed her(feet, teats) on our return.

Exercise is good for a dog in labour, I had a bitch that hadn't had a pup for over 4 hours, the vet told us to get down strait away just incase she needed a c-section, short walk to the car and out popped a pup, not that I would walk her out of the garden but a little wander in the garden always help, make sure you have a torch if its dark though!

As I said "Just my opinion" and "What I do or wouldnt do as the case may be" .  Am sure whatever you and others do is also fine.

Hi Lily

My girl went for a long walk about 30 minutes the same night she gave birth.  Her mum was fit for nothing about a week before hand but the daughter is far fitter.  If she is happy let her enjoy her freedom.

ANY NEWS YET ?
- By lilly01 [gb] Date 29.05.05 15:32 UTC
Dear All,

Well what a weird day, Sasha was not carrying any puppies despite being scanned in welp at 6 weeks.

She had an enlarged kidney and spleen due to infection, but no outward signs of illness. The vet x rayed her this morning and found no sign of puppies but an unidentified mass caused great concern and we thought it was a mumified pup so she opened her up only to find the kidney and spleen were so enlarged they had mimicked pregnancy by pressing on bowel and bladder and giving her a large belly.

She said that gone unoticed it could have proved fatel, so I am glad we have gone through this as Sasha is my baby and god forbid if anything happened to her, but I am very sad there are no pups!!

Thankyou all for your support

So sorry to hear your news. Do hope Sasha will make a full recovery.  It is amazing how many bitches reabsorb their puppies. Good Luck
