can someone explain what it means when linebreeding is described like this

is it describing the number of times the dog appears in that pariticular generation or am i way off??

Its not the number of times it appears in the pedigree but the positions in the pedigree.

A colon is usually used to separate paternal from maternal.  2:2 would mean that the same dog appeared in the second generation on the sire's side and the dam's side.  2:2,3 - appears in the second gen of the sire and second & third of dam's.

This is the method used to calculate COI by hand....before computers did it for us :-)  2:2 would give a COI of 12.5%

12.5% and above I think is the acceptable figure. I don't have the program that does it but there are a few members I think who do.

I have had any planned matings run through it just out of interest.

Above 12.5% is less likely to be acceptable than below I would have thought as it represents closer inbreeding but then I suppose it depends on who you are asking.  The highest COI pedigree listed in Willis' GSD book is over 39%, no doubt acceptable to that particular breeder at that time.

Julie, I think you are right I have it the wrong way around  12.5% is the highest you can go or supposed to go which equals a half bother sister mating??  Not 100% sure though.  I keep meaning to get a hold of the program out of interest. Not that I would ever ever breed that close.  I am a at least 3 generation person :-)

Yep, half brother/sister is 2:2 = 12.5% COI but only if there is no background inbreeding.  This is where the computer programmes are so good as some can go up to 10 generations which could double the COI or more, as all pedigrees have some background inbreeding depending on how far back you go.  It would take me days to work out 10 gens by hand!

Can i just ask?Is half brother and sister a dog that has the same mother or father ?What are they called if they have the same parents but born a year or so later?Are they still brother and sister?

they would still be siblings and referred to as from a repeat mating :)
