Hi, i dont know if anyone can help me, i bought a stethoscope today as was advised that by now i should be able to hear pups heartbeat (we are on day 57/59) Her belly is really rumbly and it is difficult to hear anything above this. I understand the pups heartbeats are quicker than mums, are they normally quite easy to pick up?

My girl recently had a litter of 7 pups, but I've never been able to pick up the pups heart beats with a stethoscope, so I shouldn't worry too much!

Good luck, not long now

Hi,

It takes a bit of practice, don't worry just stay relaxed and try and do it while your dog is standing up. Push the ear pieces into your ears snuggly so you get maximum sound, then while she is standing start from behind the ribs and slowly move the stethoscope around stopping every inch or so and really listen you will hear lots of gut sounds but a heart beat is quite fast and once you hear it there will be no mistake.

I sometimes get one side and not the other and at other times both sides, it will happen just take your time and try and do it in an empty room with no other dogs/telly on etc...
Good luck

and avoid letting the tubing rub on anything as this will interfere with sound conduction, also try and listen to less hairy bits as again the hairr interferes with conduction! Try listening to your own heartbeat to get a feel for what you are listening for. It gets easier with practice!!!!!! :)

Information on using a Stethoscope at this site

:)  I've used the info myself and it was very good :D

The only trouble is that you will want to listen ALL the time :D :D

It may simply be that they're lying the wrong way at the moment, or possibly too high under the ribs.  The description of listening to a watch is perfect tho.  Make sure that the ear pieces are positioned correctly tho or you won't hear diddly squat :D test out on yourself first :D
