Hi Further to my previous post thank you for the responses.
Yes she was in season a couple of months ago. Yesterday she was still carrying the toy around with her - also kept crying. It wasn't an upset crying more concerned than anything i think. Do you think this could be a phantom pregancy? Like i say she was in season back in March but we haven't try to breed her. I've heard that the bitch has to of had a litter before a phamton pregnancy? Please can you just tell me the signs of a phamton pregnancy and how to deal with it as i am quite concerned now.
Many Thanks

Hi Guest, the symptoms you describe are very much those of phantom pregnancy. You might find that your bitch even goes as far as producing a little milk in the next week or so. If it's really bad, your vet can offer treatment to settle things down. However my advice would be, don't molly coddle her, don't allow her to wallow in her emotional state. Take the toy away from her and keep her busy and distracted, the symptoms will subside.

It definitely sounds like a phantom. Almost all bitches suffer this to a greater or lesser degree after every season, whether or not they've been mated. Some have almost no symptoms, others go the whole hog, nesting and producing milk, and can make themselves quite ill.

Take away all her toys so that she has nothing to 'mother', and make sure she doesn't go all broody and mopy, curling up in a quiet 'den' - you may even have to take away all her bedding to stop her nesting. Cut down the protein level of her food and keep her very busy and active - be very public school, no-nonsense!

My youngest chihuahuas has had phantom pregnancy several times.
