Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / why does my dog do this??
- By moo [gb] Date 23.05.05 15:51 UTC
Just out of interest my spayed female dog seems to mark territory in the park (never anywhere else).  She then kicks her back legs over it, as a cat might do in a litter tray.

She is quite submissive and wondered if this might be why she does this very odd looking thing!

Thanks

If she is scraping her back feet behind her, then all she is doing is leaving more scent from the sweat between her toes - it's totally normal and usually done more by bitches than by dogs. :)

Oh, is that what my boy's doing? I assumed he was trying to scatter the poo itself to widen the scent, and being rather thick, missing by several feet!  :-)

One of my dogs does this too after she poops.  I've only seen her do it in the house, though, and even then she doesn't do it every time.  In any case, it's perfectly normal, so no worries.  :)

I have also heard that it is also a visual signal to other dogs who may be watching, like saying 'look here I've just marked this so that means it mine' :D
Chloe(older, in charge girlie)does this, Kayla very rarely does and Idõ only occassionally does it, only in the garden tho, not seen him do it where other dogs are watching..my thinking being that he doesn't want to draw attention to himself....bless  :)

Edited to add: Chloe is also spayed, as is Kay, and she marks like a dog, not cocking her leg (:D)but lots of little wees all over and then Kayla goes over the top with hers....strange beasts!

Not sure if I am right here, but I heard the opposite, that it is a way of covering up the scent by a submissive dog who doesn't want other dogs knowing they have been there  only what I have heard so maybe completely wrong.

It's basically advertising their presence and no it doesn't necessarily mean they are dominant, it mostly just instinct. Nothing to worry about. :-)
