I have a 20 month old Dalmatian male dog, who when the feeling takes proceeds to pee up peoples legs. It has happened a few times, the last time being up my mums leg.
We haven't as yet got him castrated, could this be a male dominence thing??
Can anybody tell me why he does it?
Thanks

It's a male thing! And not necessarily dominance - it can also be a sign of insecurity, and marking 'safe places'. One of mine did it against my leg in the show-ring! The best way to stop it is to watch him and tell him off when you see him getting into position.
:)
Thanks for coming back to me!!
The daft dog just seems to cock his leg when the mood takes. It happens so quickly, all we have to do is apologise profusely.
He is also shredding my sofa little by little, we have tried the anti chew dog spray but even that doesn't work. He used to have a bed but also shredded that!
Can you suggest anything because by the end of the month we may all be sitting on the floor!!!
Thanks again
The sire to my dogs actually did it up one of the judges when she was examining him so it is fairly normal. Thomas does it on the girls. I dont know if neutering him might help but I find a sharp tone when Thomas does it to the girls makes him run for the hills.
My oldest dalmatian shredded everything but then we discovered vet bed which I know some people will disagree with but we found it to be unshredable combined with a plastic bed. They do grow out of it but there are times when it feels like it will never end ;)
Would I be able to buy a vet bed at the vets?
Wilko is left during the day, although my partner pops in and takes him out at lunch time, so I know the situation is not ideal. I also have cats, the tom cat stays downstairs with the dog for most of the day so he does have a bit of company. My sofa now has one decent cushion, which Wils sleeps on. The trouble is we don't actually catch him doing it and I have read that it is pointless telling them off hours after the naughty deed has been done!!
I am a bit worries about having him castrated as I have read that sometimes it changes them. Wils has a lovely nature (apart from the peeing and chewing) and is very gentle and loving. I don't want to change that.
Well, thanks for your advice

Vetbed is a sort of 'fake-fur' blanket, which is easily washable and very hardwearing. I must admit one of mine delighted in chewing holes in it when she was younger, but generally it's pretty indestructible! You can order it over the net, or the larger pet stores often have it on a roll.
To stop the chewing I'd keep him out of the sitting-room when you're not around - castration won't do anything to stop that as it's boredom, I'm afraid. It doesn't sound as if castration would be to his benefit anyway.
:)
Would castration not stop him weeing up people though JG. I have only ever had two males and both have been entire.
Got to agree though that it might be better to either let him have a room for himelf where he cant do any harm as I have to when I leave my youngest if they dont come to the show. The younger ones have never been shredders but Purdy shredded a lovely swinging hamock in about 10minutes. Believe me she got the message I wasnt happy even though I didnt catch her doing it ;)

I've never owned a castrated dog so I wouldn't know if it'd cure the cocking on people. Not all entire dogs do it (my other entire boy never has, for example), and the one who did appears to have grown out of it. Castration can only cure problems caused by too much testosterone - if this isn't the cause, then it won't be the cure.
:)
That is interesting do you not find having two males in a house with females causes friction? I would love another dog as I prefer them to the bitches but am nervous in case they would fight - apologies op for highjacking thread :)

The girls are spayed, otherwise I'd be a gibbering wreck! But the girls are definitely top! The boys get on fine bar the occasional bit of posturing ... but I'll never have another male!
Thanks that explains it. I dont think Thomas could take the competition he thinks they are all part of his harem its such a shame they dont feel the same :)

LOL! The girls are always in charge! :D
