Thanks Blue.  My Westie knows when he's in the house or garden and starts barking I tell him to shut-up and he does.  He's very good most of the time but for some reason when he's out in public he just goes into a complete frenzy when he sees another dog!  He doesn't seem to hear anything I say.

hi guest.

what age is your dog, ive got one that still thinks he can act like that and he is three and a half now. I just turn around and walk the other way and this can help I dont say a word to him, if thats what he wants to do then the walk is finished , he soon stops when he realises he is on his way back home.

It may be worth registering with us as a member. Repeat posts are sometimes deleted.

He sounds very much a big dog in a little body ;-)

Not sure what to suggest maybe some of the others will come to our aid. Just join as a member and join in and repost under the behaviour board.

I have been quite lucky.I make a point of taking puppies out at tea time when everywhere is so busy, to local shops etc and touch wood not had too much trouble.

Has it been going on for a long time? or is it more recent behaviour?

Clicker training may be able to help him stop this behaviour along with taking him out every day in public so its a "normal" event.
Have a clicker in your pocket ( most pet shops sell them) and as soon as he starts barking at home, if he is in the same room, the moment and I mean the very moment he obeys your "shut up" command, click and give him a tiny treat that you know he loves. He will soon learn that the moment he stops barking, he hears a click and then gets a treat.  Once you have cracked this at home, most dogs learn very quickly, try it when you are out.
Clicker training is just amazing and worth looking into. Maybe do a search on here or on google, for more info on it.
