i went along to an obedience group monday evening for the first time with my nine month old springer/border collie X.  We were told that during the good weather they train outside because then they can use the agility equipment!

Sure enough we had about 20 minutes of training and then proceeded to spend the other 25 minutes of basic agility.  Taking it in turns to jump over very low hurdles.  Trying to go though a tunnel while the Trainer held the other end up.

I found all this strange.  Everyone else seemed to think this was all quite normal and fun to do.  But if i wanted agility i would have gone to agility!  I am interested only in training my dog to be an obedient companion and 20 minutes is not very long.

Are all clubs like this?

No I don't think so, every obedience class I have been to is simply obedience unless the trainer thinks a piece of equipment will help with obedience but this would be further in to the training - like you say if you wanted agility you would go to agility, I would look else where so that you pay for what you want - or maybe have a word with the trainer to ask why agility is involved ?  Good luck - the kennel club have lists of training centres if you need them :)

In our club we do tend to break up the evening by doing something fun, i.e. mini agility or heel work to music type stuff. Doing something fun helps the dog to enjoy working with you. 20 mniutes may not seem very long for you but 45 minutes non-stop obedience training would be a lot of concentrating for a dog going to training for the first time. I would imagine any training is good news, even calling your dog through a tunnel is teaching recall in a novel circumstance. Very low hurdles and tunnels shouldn't cause too much of a problem in a 9 month old dog. I would try and find out of this happens every week or whether it is a one off. If you are not happy have a word with the instructor.  Is it a fixed class, i.e. a 6 week course, or a rolling class where anyone can join in at any time?
