Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Rescue Remedy, how much to give?
- By Guest [gb] Date 23.05.05 20:48 UTC
My bitch is in season and even though they are separated my dog is getting himself worked up. I am giving him rescue remedy but was wondering how much is okay to give him - I am giving him four drops twice daily, can I increase this?
- By Isabel Date 23.05.05 20:52 UTC
Its basically brandy so I would say not, dogs do not have the liver enzymes to break down alcohol so it could make him quite grotty.  I think you are barking up the wrong tree anyway it would probably take a sledge hammer for him to forget about your bitch, could he go to stay somewhere else for a while?
- By ice_queen Date 24.05.05 07:45 UTC
Isabel, it is not basically brandy, it's a tiny bit brandy, mostly flower extracts.  I have never had problems giving it to dogs, however with males when a bitch in season so far the only thing we found that worked is Tardac.  Even drugging our boy with sleeping tablets does nothing, he just does more damage to himself while being drowsy :( No his down the vets on the first day of each season.  Also Try adding rasberry viniger into your bitch diet from day one of the next season, this will help mask the smell, especialy when she wee's, it won't wind up all your neighbours dogs!!!!

Last time I looked at a bottle it listed grape alcohol as the first ingredient.

I've just checked out my small collection of flower remedies of different types - the alchohol content varies between 11% and 66% - but there's probably more alchohol in a dollop of brandy sauce than 4 drops of RR...... The alchohol is added as a preservative to the water based distillation (for want of a better word)
- By Isabel Date 24.05.05 18:55 UTC
Do you mean up to 66% of the fluid content or up to 66% proof. If it is the first that is very much stronger than any brandy sauce you are likely to make and if it is the second......
I'm sure 4 drops would be OK but some people are talking of giving quite a bit more.
I'm sorry, you clearly believe in the power of these flower essences but from my understanding of it, it is the vasodilating effect of the alcohol that gives the dog the uuummmph ;) and I would suggest anyone using it check their bottle for amount and proof of the alcohol and proceed with caution :)

I don't think you can actually overdose on rescue remedy so it should be safe to give him more.  I usually put some in my dogs water bowl :-)
- By Anna [gb] Date 23.05.05 20:58 UTC
What about some of those deodrant tablets that you can get from pet shops for bitches to try to mask their smell to dogs.  I'm not sure if they work or not but they might be worth a try. :-)
- By Dill [gb] Date 23.05.05 22:00 UTC
They do work but you have to start giving them right at the beginning of the season or a few days before if poss.  Not much use this time :(   The sprays are said to be completely useless - in fact some dogs 'know' the smell is associated with a bitch in season

You could try Valerian Compound from Dorwest - I found it helped a little in this situation, although nothing will return him to normal until she has finished. Word of warning - it smells awful, like iodene, so hate to think what it must taste like, so have a VERY tasty treat to hand after squirting it in his mouth (I used garlic sausage) ;)

Hi Guest it's not so much the amount you give, but how often.Maybe start with 10 drops and higher or lower the dosage from there.

I posted a while back about a friends underweight, lack of appetite dog,she got a mixture made up,and boy it did reek of booze, but within 10 minutes of giving it,the dog scoffed down her food and has been brilliant ever since!!

I have seen remarkable results from the rescue remedy among others,so i think it's a little more than just Brandy ;)

I actually made a error and gave my boy two syringes full and it made him look like the 6 million dollar man going round the ring so be very careful it is powerful stuff.  I actually give Tom some Scullcap and valarium tablets from Dorwest with some serene um tablets and find although it doesnt stop him being on hunger strike it does dull the patheticness.

 2 syringe fulls, what size of syringe?!  Are you not worried about dope testing? :D
- By thomas-the-spot [gb] Date 24.05.05 20:25 UTC
The person who was handling did say a similar thing and has told me under no circumstances am I to drug him again ;)  He looked very bewildered by the end of the day and I did consider taking some myself if it was that good!!!!

Hi frodo
I may have stupid head on, but what is rescue remedy?
Where can i get it.
I would love my dog to woof her food down in 10 mins.
Shes so bl--dy fussy.
I have given up on the foods i have tried with her.
Get on  one she likes then that lasts a week or so, then back to square one again.

Hi lazydaze,

You can get Rescue remedy from Boots chemist :-)
- By frodo [au] Date 25.05.05 00:27 UTC
Hya Lazydaze :)

Actually hers wasnt  homeopathic,it is a herbal tincture. All it is,is alfalfa,(alcohol being used to preserve it),which is often used as an appetite stimulant, the liquid form is much stronger than the tablet or capsule form, she tried both of these and they did nothing, however the alfalfa tincture has changed this dog completely, for the better, she tried the malted kelp tabs from dorwest and pretty much every other natural appetite stimulant known to man,all to no avail, the alfalfa tincture was her last shot, and it has worked wonderfully! :) I would love for all those cynics to have seen her dog, before and after, she regularly didnt eat for days at a time, turned her nose up to just about everything. She gives the drops twice a day before her meals and thus far she has eaten every one of them :D

You have to give 1 drop per kilo,so she gives 7 drops. I swear this stuff really, really works,i am very impressed.

Just look in your yellow pages under 'homeopath' and they will be able to mix you up a batch.Remember it is just "plain alfalfa",no other remedies mixed in. Do a google on 'alfalfa dogs appetite stimulant" or something in that vain  ;) and you should come up with heaps of info .

I dont know any more details, let me know if you want more info and i'll give her a call and let you know :)

Guest it would be good if you could join and let us know how it's working :)

Just remember it's not so much the amount you give, but the frequency. You could try 3-4 drops every 10-15 minutes or 3-4 drops one to four times daily depending on how severe your boy is reacting.

http://www.ainsworths.com/site/combination.aspx

Ainsworths stock the whole range and more of homoeopathic remedies and their service is excellent.

If you want something to calm down an oversexed dog etc Rescue Remedy is not the answer, you need to be looking at other things........

gelsemium, phosphorus and sometimes, pulsatilla
