Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / only one test*cle

I have a show puppy who is doing very well in training class. problem is he only has one test*cle. We are unsure if we ever felt the second one? Vet said he cannot find the other? Is there any way to check to see if the other one is hiding? My vet checked my puppy today and he had no testicles (I knew he had 1!!), but he found it laying beside his penis but was able to bring it back down.
I read somewhere you can have them scanned, but you need a professional. Where do I go? my puppy is 6 months old now and I am getting to be very worried. He is a large breed. any help or direction would be greatly received.
I am worried as my vet said if he cannot feel it he will only have one. result he said is he needs to be casterated. He is aware he is a show puppy.  Any help would be welcomed!! thank you

There's still time for the other one to descend. However, even if it doesn't there's no need for him to be castrated. The retained one certainly ought to be removed for safety, but the normal one can be left in place without harm.

Of course with only one descended test*cle he's unlikely to do well in shows, and he should never be bred from.

Ive known them come down as late at 16 months, I wouldn't worry just yet!!
Ive also found they budge more when bitches in the house are in season.

Fingers crossed for you.

Simply ask your vet to refer you to an expert in the use of scanners.  There are some vets who are well trained in using this as a diagnostic tool.

If the retained test*cle is found to be lying above the inguinal ring it will be unable at this stage to pass down, but if it is below then it may well still descend.

There is no hurrry to have the retained one removed either as it is just that there is a greater risk of cancer in it being in the wrong place, it isn't inevitable or likely to happen very quickly.

Franklyunless it is a breed where the coat alters unacceptably I eould wait until your boy is fully grown and looking like a male before having him fully castrated if the teste doesn't drop, as with one he will be unshowable so you may as well have them both off to prevent even the remotest chance of him procreating and passing the trait on.

Unfortunately vets and people who know nothing about it say that if they're not down by 6 months the dog will get cancer, bla, bla, bla.

I know a dog, which when I felt him, I could feel the other one.  Unfortunately there was another person around at the time saying that they will have big problems and to get him done.  They also said that he had something wrong because of the swelling that came occasionally, the boy was just getting aroused and there was nothing abnormal at all.  His grandfather's didn't come down until he was 9 months old, so I knew that there was a good chance of it appearing late, but they took the advice of the vet and the other person and had him done.

I thought that it is the female that carries the gene not the male?  Am I wrong in thinking this as  I was told that this was so??  Nopt very well up on this side of things as you can tell :d

Both parents must carry the gene in Monorchids (only 1 test*cle) & Cryptorchids (undescended/none).

so there may be hope yet :-) I would like to take him to be scanned to see if there is hope of his testicle being below the inguinal ring. I have never experienced this. Many people in our breed say that it will never come down so I better find him a pet home cause I will never be able to show him now. But there are a select few that have said it cam down at a later date. Some people make it sound so simple. oh he is 6 months, only 1 testicle, you want to pet home him... thanks for your help, hopefully I can get a second opinion from a specialist.
