Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ear Wax Treatment - Help!
- By scruffy [gb] Date 24.05.05 08:08 UTC
We adopted a lurcher a few months ago and were told he had ear mites. He received treatment for this from our vet and the mites have now gone.  Unfortunately he still seems to be troubled by a lot of wax, especially in one ear, and keeps shaking his head.  We have taken him back to the vets on more than one occasion with the same problem. We were given another course of drops which didn't clear it and a subsequent course of Panacur, which initally seemed to help.  However, as I think he still has the wax problem I took him to the vets again yesterday.  The vet just lifted the flap of his ear and did a visual inspection (didn't use the ear instrument with light) and said he did have wax, but this was nothing to worry about.  However, I don't like the fact he keeps shaking his head and that he seems to have some discomfort especially in his left ear.
Does anyone have any recommendations for treating this without going backwards and forwards to the vets. Cheers.

Quite simple!  You need Thornit powder.

If you do a search on here using the facility in the top right hand corner you will find it mentioned favourably on many previous threads.  In my experience it never fails to help with these sorts of problems.

Hi.  One of my dogs have a recurrent problem with wax and head shaking.  Our vet booked him in under sedation to clear out all the wax and we had to use eardrops for a week afterwards and touch wood he has been find since.

Did you try Thornit powder first Fiona?

With our first of our current breed, which can be prone to scubby ears, I took him to the vet and got ear drops when his ears first became dirty.  He hated these and they weren't terribly effective, so I then asked someone experienced in the breed what they used.  They said Thornit and gave me some to try and we haven't used anything else since! In my experience the stuff is nothing short of miraculous :)  I can't recommend it highly enough!
