im looking to take my 7wk old husky pup to classes when shes had her jabs done.i have been told to only go to a specialised trainer in this breed.is that true or just being to fussy?? i know huskies are harder to train and shouldnt be let off the lead..(classes tend to do off lead recall) or do i take her to a general class ?????

Will your breeder not help a bit more? :) He or she should be able to give you help about training classes

No classes should do off lead work where it is not safe to do so, within a hall or enclosed field for instance, so although, by all accounts, you will not ever be able to trust your husky off lead outside I don't see why you can't join in with a normal class.  It may well be usefull in teaching some form of recall that would do useful around the home environment, the socialising with all sorts of dogs, large and small, will be good for her and who knows you might even make some headway in walking to heel! :)

I took my two Sibes to general or regular obedience classes, they didn't have a problem with it. Though with the off lead training, I refused to let go of the leash because we weren't in a very safe area. The other dogs were very trustworthy (labs!) but my huskies, well, I didn't want to take the risk of them running away. =)

I'd find a few classes then go check them out without your pup, so you can see exactly what goes on.  It may save you some money - you can avoid signing up and paying for a course then finding out it's unsuitable (i've done this, and lost £35 because of a very rough trainer).

Most puppy classes will be in a secure environment of course, and some - like the one I took both my pups too - use a longline for recall training, so that pup can't run off.  My trainer did yoyo recalls between her and me on an 8m longline.

So check them out first, and remember - if there's anything you're uncomfortable with, say so, if the trainer is a good one they'll respect your wishes - it's your dog, after all.
