Topic Dog Boards / General / keeping my dog in his crate over night?
- By Animad [gb] Date 23.05.05 12:06 UTC
Hi all
I have done a search but couldn't find the answer i'm looking for. I have 2 dogs both have crates. I was hoping someone could tell me how i go about using the crates to help toliet training over night.
Both dogs (7 months and 3 1/2 months) are clean during the day if let out regularly however on a night they can wee and poo for england and it's really getting me down. I let them out at 10pm ish for their last toilet before bed and get up at 6am to let them out in a morning.
I have a crate for each of them although they usually share one. How do i start with the training and how long should i expect my younger puppy to go before i need to let her out. Is all night too long yet?
Any advice would be appreciated as the thought of getting up to so much mess in the morning is really getting me down!!

I think that asking a dog to be dry overnight for 8 hours may be a little ambitious for a 3.5 month old puppy.

The dogs should definitely be put in separated cages otherwise how will you know which one does it?

Besides the presence of urine/faeces will generally trigger the other one to deposit same, it is what dogs do.

I generally get up mid sleep and let dog out.

Your crates may also be too big if they do this, most dogs don't like to sleep IN their waste.

I would go back to setting the alarm clock so that you can see what is their current optimum time so that you can gradually increase the time in incremental steps over several days............

I agree with tohme, although not bragging but my 9 weeks old pup is compleatly clean over night from 10pm to 8am. has been for a week now :) so its not too ambitious ;)

A lot depends on breed size and diet and some dogs are more fastidious than others.

Whilst it is great that many dogs are clean and dry so early it is, after all, not a competition and, a bit like humans, at what age a child became clean and dry when they were toddlers means diddly squat in adulthood.

All dogs are individuals and have their own growth and development rate which is right for them.

Comparisons can be invidious and potentially harmful if some owners have less than realistic expectations for their puppies.........

Snap scary and gems
Mine was clean day and night in about 2 weeks, but the 7 in the morning was a killer lol.
Now at 18 mths old she creeps up the stairs about 10 pm and wont even get up at 8am,
9ish she will go out( and thats only because i am calling her from the bottom of the stairs) and then straight back to bed she goes until about 11am. Lazy of what lol.

I had the same problem with my youngest.  We used a crate for overnight and have never had an accident since.  We only used the crate for about three weeks and that did the trick.

My 11 week old CKCS is clean over night (last wee at about midnight, then I get up at 6am), sometimes she doesn't quite make it as far as the back door before starting to dribble, but we're getting there.

During the day though we can take her out in the garden when we see her sniffing round the floor, stand for 10, 15 or even 20 minutes and nothing, then we get back in the house and she wees!  Also after waking, she can go for a wee in the garden, then come back in and do another little wee - does anyone have any ideas why this might be? or any advice?

Thanks
