Topic Dog Boards / General / What age to start a collar on a puppy?
- By cavalier puppy [us] Date 23.05.05 02:10 UTC
We will be bringing home our new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy next week at 11 weeks old. The breeder hasn't mentioned anything about a collar yet.

Should we put a collar on her just so she will get used to it, or only when we start puppy school (with a leash)?

Is there a certain age for this?

Thank-you!

I start putting collars on my puppies before they go to their new homes.

The earlier you start the less trouble you will have lead and collar training.  6 weeks is what I do wityh mine and let them walk about with me holding a lead so that it doesn't tense and encouraging them to come where I want after that.

I have an independant breed and they can really dig their heels in if not had a lead on before 12 weeks.

Hi, I always put a soft collar on straight away for the pup to get used to it, making sure its not too loose or too tight, with name tags so they get used to the 'jangling' I would also try a lead just taking her in the garden as you don't want problems on your first day of training ;)
Have you chosen a name for her yet?
Have fun and remember there's always someone here to help if you have any problems or just want to share your experiences with :)

Thank-you to Brainless and Missie, for the information and advice!. I will ask my breeder about what she has done to-date, and will start as soon as we get the pup, regardless. My kids picked out her collar and "jangly tag" today; they chose the name Koby for her.

This is a wonderful site!

I'm guessing I'll have lots of questions along the way! :-)

My dogs(cavaliers)have collars on 24/7 from day one, I have a few small round collars that the puppies in the past have grown out of & they gradually work their way up the sizes until they need a full sized adult one

we left a collar with the breeder the second time we went to see our puppy, they put the collar on her a few days before we brought her home.

The ID tag clanging on the stainless steel food bowl is taking a bit of getting used to for her and she does tend to stratch at it, but we're getting there.
