Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lewis - OCD update
- By Sharon McCrea [gb] Date 29.05.02 18:13 UTC
An update for those who have followed Lewis the wolfhound's OCD saga.

I thought Lewis wasn't going to need surgery to his left shoulder until his escapade on top of the 5' tall ferret house just over a week ago. He must have jarred his shoulder juming down, because since that he has had a slight limp on his left fore after exercise. We were up to see the specialist vet today, and as well as the limp, he pointed out that Lewis' left shoulder is less well muscled than the right, and that when standing he takes more weight on his right fore. The vet gave me the option to take him away for more rest and then reassessment, but said that if Lewis' was his dog he'd operate at once. The good news is that he is delighted with the result of the previous OCD surgey on the right shoulder. So Lewis is back in hospital - much to the delight of all the vet nurses :-) - and is slated for surgery tomorrow.

Got my fingers crossed for you for tomorrow Sharon.

Best wishes, John

Hi Sharon,
Hope everything is okay tomorrow, sure it will be. Barney had his second op today on his other "elbow". They cut the bone and leave it to grow 'properly' (my layman's language). The first op seems really successful so cant wait to get him back on home again on Friday. Terrible trying to stop them running around and jumping though isnt it, especially when he wants to play with Molly!
Best wishes Gina

Good luck for tomorrow Sharon - sounds like Lewis will be lapping up all the attention from the nurses at the vets.

Many thanks for the good wishes everyone. I know Lewis is in the best of hands, so I'm not too worried about the op, but I still wish the poor lad had got away without it. He's spent so much of his puppyhood either sore or cooped up.

John, sorry I didn't reply to a previous post from you. I wasn't on line for a few days, and when I got the e-mail notification the thread had vanished.

Gina, best of luck to Barney - do please let us know how he gets on. As you say keeping them from playing isn't easy, and the pathetic looks make you feel like a real heel. Maybe we can swap ideas on how to keep Barney & Lewis amused :-)

Lisa, yep :D ... Lewis is a big softy and the vet nurses cheered when they heard he had to stay again. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound :-)

Chin up Sharon, at least once the ops done and the post op period past his life will become much freer and enjoyable for him judging by the success of the first op. Soreness and cooped up will be a thing of the past :)

Thanks Isabel :-) The left shoulder wasn't anything like as bad as the right on the arthrogram and although he is slightly lame he wasn't yelping in pain at rest the way he did before the first op, so hopefully this will be the end of the problem.

Hi Lisa, he had his op yesterday and they took out another massive flap. The op was carried out late in the evening because they had a long complex emergency case, so although he's fine they are keeping him until tomorrow morning. Or so they say: apparently the vet nurse spent last night keeping an eye on the emergency ..... and Lewis spent the night snoozing beside her with his head on her lap. I have my suspicions about those vet nurses and Lewis :-)

LOL @ the nurses. I know exactly what they are up to ;-) When I worked as a vet nurse many moons ago I used to stay in the flat above the hospital when on call and would often take a couple of the RSPCA stray dogs up to the flat. They loved spending the night with me cuddling and snoozing :D

Sometimes I would give owners who I knew were worrying more than usual a call about 10pm just to let them know how their little one was doing and if I managed to build up a rapport with the owner I would often offer to keep the dog in the flat with me. Of course they were delighted knowing their dog had 100% attention, little did they know my ulterior motive and passion for doggie cuddles :D I would never do it without their permission or if the dog shouldn't be moved I hasten to add :o

Hope he's enjoying himself :-)

Claire, the last time Lewis was in he stayed in the flat with the on-call vet nurse and I reckon its a good guess that he might be there tonight if the emergency case is OK. They didn't ask for permission, but I was more than happy. I don't think I'm an excessively worried owner, but Lewis is a very cuddly dog :-). I imagine he is enjoying himself because instead of being scared or worried when he went back, he swiped the thank-you cards all over the place with his wagging tail.

Hi Sharon

Pleased to hear that Lewis seems to be quite happy (!) after his op - they just leave you with the difficult bit of keeping him quiet!

Best wishes
Christine

Hi Christine, and I have two 9 week old kittens called Saffron and Sage in the big cage now. Do I risk nibbled kittens or just tie Lewis down :-)?

Sharon so glad he is okay bet you will be glad to have him home....got Barney back now and he seems fine too.

Hi Gina, glad that Barney is doing well. We got Lewis back this morning, and he came in, emptied his bladder and bowels and then threw up while I was cleaning it :-). But he's fine now, and I think the two and a half hour trip home just upset him.

Oh dear - how delightful! Still I bet you are glad to have him home. Hope his recovery goes well.

Hi ya, poor you! but worth it all to have him back I am sure. Barney slept all the way home (2 1/2 to 3 hours) with his head in my lap with my thinking he was going to honk up all over me but luckily all I had to endure was about 3 pints of dribble ugh (wish it was me that was driving - will have to learn LOL) :D
Best wishes Gina x

Hi Gina & Lisa, I think I'd sooner clean the floor than be dribbled on for 3 hours :-) Lewis' digestion is back to normal, but Megan and Teelin comimg out of season, and Flea is hot to trot., so Lewis has discovered sex. It isn't easy to make him rest when lust is all he can think about :-).
