Hi Britney
Can't help I'm afraid. I lost my old girl last year to kidney failure, and tried to find out about dialysis. It seems that they do it in USA (as ever) but I couldn't find anywhere here. However, my girl was given a diagnosis of 2 weeks, but with a lot of research and a home cooked diet, we managed to gain 8 months. In the end, nothing I did with her food made a difference and we let her go, rather than see her deteriorate and suffer. It's a terrible thing when there's nothing you can do. I used a lot of info from a private website regarding protein and phosphorous, to create her diet. Let me know if you would like it (pm me) and  I will find it for you (I put everything away, but didn't throw it away!)

I don't know of any dogs that have had dialysis but I have a very close friend, our best man in fact, who had several years of dialysis while waiting for a transplant.  Initially he used a machine and then converted to chemical dialysis where a large bag of chemicals are dipped into the abdomen via a tube circulated through the tissues and drained out again.  As he was an inteligent being :) he was able to understand it was a means to an end and was always hopeful for the transplant that he finally got but his life remained restricted in terms of diet and in between dialysis he frequently felt extremely grotty.  Add to that the importance of maintaining a high level of hygiene in order to safeguard against blood poisoning I would have to say that personally I feel this is no life for a dog.

Hi Britney

This is the web address, where I got so much information that helped me to keep my old girl going with good quality of life for so much longer than the vets could believe:

http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.html (sorry you'll have to cut and paste it, I don't know how to do it as a link)

I wish your friend well

Kind regards

Kat
