Has anyone lost pups through canine herpes? Or can anyone offer any info as
to what to do to prevent this? Do you vaccinate before or during pregnancy?
The info I have is that the vaccination is most affective at 7days and then again at 7 weeks and a course of antibiotics can also be given at this time.  Usually if the bitch has it and not vaccinated the puppies do not survive, I have also heard that the bitch develops a cough when has it but do not know if this is true.  Someone said they would treat the pups with the mothers serum, what is this?
Its for someone else not for me but any input would be appreciated

Hi Missie, yes I do vaccinate for CHV....  I have a bitch who 2 healthy litters and then went on to have a litter with FPS.  FPS has been linked to CHV, but do not confuse it with the full cause, there are many factors which contribute to FPS.  After losing the last litter, and after much research I decided to go with the CHV vaccine.   The bitch was Vaccinated with 5 hours of the mating and then again exactly 2weeks before due whelping date.  I also gave a course of Antibiotics for 10 days pre-mating and for 2 weeks after mating. a period of 5 weeks in which not AB's were giving and then 7days before due date started AB's again. I did not notice any cough!!!!  The pups that were produced were larger than the other 2 litters and were very fit and healthy, although the actual litter was smaller, but this bitch tended toproduce small litters compared to the breed norm. So no difference in that side of things.  The Pups were a little more advanced than previous litters and are now 8 months old.  Although very large at birth, nearly double the normal breed weight, they have devolped evenly and are very much on track for the breed standard.

Personally, I would never consider a mating now, without using this vaccine.

Although, as I have said, there are many factors which contribute to FPS, CHV being one of them, using the CHV Vaccine should not be used as a sole treatment for the protection of FPS.  It has worked for me but I do know of breeders that have vaccinated and have still gone on to lose, maybe one or two pups from a litter.  Cause Unknown.......

Edited to add, You mention the mothers serum.  This is in fact a blood transfusion,  The blood is taken from the mother and is put through cetrafugle (sp) force, seperating the blood, it is only the white cells that are used in the transfusion, this is classed as the serum.

I always give the chv vaccination, mine have it 8 days after mating and then 10-14 days before whelping.
