I have just bought my first tank (Juwel Rekord 96) anyone got any advice or can recommend some good websites?

Sure can, go to fishgeeks.com , sign up as a member and get yourself on the forums there.  They will tell you absolutely everything you need to know, from the best (and worst!) fish, to how to avoid New Tank Syndrome - that thing where novices overload the tank and lose half the fish, _then_ find out what they did wrong :) the best fishkeepers have done it (myself included, i'm ashamed!), but the guys and gals at fishgeeks can talk you through setup to stocking, and you should be able to avoid most, if not all, the common pitfalls of a new tank.

Apart from that, the best advice I could give you is this - be patient!  And be aware of the people in the fish shops - it sounds harsh, but sadly a fair few of them are painfully clueless about fish.  No offense meant to all the clue-ful people out there!

All free to join :D and all brilliant :D  Check out the setting up and cycling pages, you can now cycle the tank without fish (Fishless cycle) which means you don't lose any fish just by cycling your tank :D 

Most important thing to remember is BE PATIENT - Cycling the aquarium can take 6 weeks or more and can't be hurried, live plants also help with water quality as well as looking pretty ;)

Hopefully a JUwel Record will have good instructions on cyling your tank but check onsite first ;)

Have fun - its a great hobby but watch out for multiple tank syndrome :D - that's when one tank just isn't enough!! (I currently have three on the go :) )

I have the multiple tank syndrome too, lol
But had a major disaster today.One of the kid's must have turned up the thermostat and all my wee baby fish have died, 25 of them.  

awwww - that's awful :(

Are you sure that the thermostat isn't stuck in the 'on' position??   That's how most of them go, unless they're dropped :(

What fish were they?

They were guppies
The themostat seems ok now so i can only guess it was one of the kids messing

My OH decided that he fancied some tropical fish a few weeks ago-but we're forever finding fish going missing!  And no remains left either... I'm blaming the shark! :)  It's a bit frustrating though because there are so many nice types of fish out there but you have to be patient in terms of waiting to add new ones, but they are nice to watch!

It's silver?  A silver shark? :D  It's his domain, although the cats too are fairly intrigued... ;)

Unfortunately the name 'Silver Shark' could refer to anything :)  but you could well be right that he's eating the smaller fish
