My father in law sadly passed away last night, he was only 65 but very poorly. In his life he enjoyed fishing immensely and he will be cremated and his ashes taken to the river he fished. Mother in law was talking about having a hymn connected with fishing, now i know there are some but I cannot help with any titles as I've not been to sunday school/church for many years, can anyone help with any songs, my mind is a blank, any reading or hymn suggestion would be much appreciated, he loved nature, art, fishing and sport, these were his passions along with his beloved cat Geraldine.

Sorry to hear of your loss. :(
There's a hymn called "Shall we gather at the River", though it's not easy to sing ...

I'm sorry to hear of your loss - this hasn't been a good year for you has it {{hugs}}
What about "For those in peril on the sea" ?
Or there are several to chose from here :www.veteran.co.uk/VTC5CD.htm
(sorry - still can't do links)

Margot

A thought for music either as people are coming into the church/crematorium or as they leave - how about the theme from Schubert's 'Trout Quintet'?
I don't know what its called but remember a hymn that goes:
Follow Me, Follow Me
Leave Your Homes and Family
Leave Your Fishing Nets and Boats Along the Shore....
Leave the seeds that you have sown
Leave the crops that you've grown
Leave the people you have known and
Follow Me...
It may not be a suitable funeral hymn but its a nice one.
Very sorry to hear of your loss too :-(
Sorry to hear of your loss, craigles. A lovely hymn is 'For the beauty of the earth'. It's mainly about our gratitude for the beauty of nature and the love we've been blessed with through our family lives. It's often sung at weddings but there's no reason why it wouldn't be appropriate at a funeral.

What about Morning Has Broken?
A beautiful hymn to nature or All Things Bright and Beautiful, another salute to God's work?

Many thanks for all your suggestions, hubby's mum has taken Tohme's suggestion of All Things Bright and Beautiful as nature was very close to his heart. I also like the Follow me Fisherman song, i just need to try and find the title and hope they have the music for it at the Crematorium. The song chose by MIL to leave is non-religious but sums Michael up, it's I did it My Way Frank Sinatra, maybe not appropriate for a religious ceremony but had any of you known Michael I feel confident you would agree. Michael always did it his way, as according to him this was the only way. I have had a rough year so let's hope things get better for me soon. My hubby is the one suffering here though not me, he's just gone to collect the death certificate and register the death with his Mum as he is an only child and MIL and Michael have been married 43 yrs so she is very lonely right now. Excuse my typing i'm being assisted by a 13 month old little girl who is getting ready for a nap! Eldest daughter gone to Alton Towers so I'm babysitting, I couldn't let her down this was arranged long before Michaels death.

You have had a bad year haven't you. And All things bright and beautiful is an excellent choice. Take care Karen
The words of the 'Follow me' song look as if they'd fit to the music of the John Denver song of the same title.

Hubby and Mum have now been to sort the flowers out and there is to be only the one floral tribute with other donations to the COPD Ward that he passed away on. The flowers are to be an MG badge as he has always owned MG's. I'm sorry I keep posting on here but to talk on here is relief to me as hubby is very busy with Mum and selfish as though this may sound I feel left out. I'm sorry for last comment but it's just how I feel right now, I do appreciate he needs to be with his Mum etc., but I would like to be there for him but right now he's not allowing it.
