Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / What to put on dog's ID tag
- By Guest [gb] Date 17.05.05 08:42 UTC
What do you recommened that i put on my dog's ID tag. I thought about my surname, home and mobile number because then if someone knows the address they might try and break in the house but if it is just my number it is easily changed if i keep getting weird calls. What can i put on the tag so i am within the law?
- By kayc [gb] Date 17.05.05 08:48 UTC
The law says that you must have your surname, and full address i'm afraid. and telephone no. You do not have to put the dogs name on the tag.
- By tohme Date 17.05.05 08:54 UTC
The law is quite clear:

Control of Dog Order 1992

Every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort, shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached thereto.

You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification disc.

Thats really good to know. On my last dog, I only had his name and my phone number. With the new pup I will put an address on and my surname.
Thanks

I better get down to the shops and buy a new tag!! I didnt realise that my name and address needed to be on it! I have a 12 week old puppy and i got him a tag with his name and my phone number on it. Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention!! :-) :-)

If this dog should care to roam
Smack his bum and send him home.

Would have to be lickle teeny writing though :D
- By keeley [gb] Date 17.05.05 12:19 UTC
My dog is chipped - is this not enough then?  I didn't realise you have to actually put a 'tag' on them too, or have I covered myself with his chip?!  Confused!!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.05.05 12:21 UTC
No, they have to have a tag on the collar as well.
- By tohme Date 17.05.05 12:42 UTC
If your dog is "found" somewhere out of hours most people will not have access to a scanner, and therefore you don't know where your dog may end up.  Whereas if you have a tag on and it is found in the next street, as happened to me recently, I could return the dog to its house straightaway.
- By Vicki [gb] Date 17.05.05 12:57 UTC
Oh Hell - back to the engravers for me then - mine both have only their name and my telephone number - oops!
- By keeley [gb] Date 17.05.05 13:39 UTC
If my dog escaped there'd be no chance anyone would find it, he'd be off with the birds and given his previous expeditions 'off lead' I daresay he'd never ever run out of steam long enough for anyone to catch it and read a collar :D :D :D  However, I shall now get on with organising one.  My mum used to use those little gold twist top 'cases' that you then inserted a rolled up piece of paper in with your name and address on - can you still get them?!
- By tohme Date 17.05.05 13:47 UTC
Yes but generally they rust, get stuck and if someone CAN open them, the writing is usually illegible or has "run" due to rain etc.............

Think of it this way, why make it more difficult than necessary  for someone to return your dog............?
- By ClaireyS Date 17.05.05 13:48 UTC
you can still get them , I used them on my cats once but they kept losing the bottom half with the piece of paper in :(
- By JenP Date 17.05.05 19:56 UTC
This is true Claire - I used to use them on dogs I was fostering, but the bottom half kept unscrewing :(
- By ali-t [gb] Date 17.05.05 18:45 UTC
I use the twist ones and found that putting insulating tape round the seal prevents it from unscrewing, rusting, water getting in etc and it is still very accessible.  It also means that people don't have access to your address and phone number unless the tag gets lost or the dog wearing the tag gets lost - this is a definite advantage

I am afraid, due to personal circumstances, I will only have my surname and my mobile number on my dogs tags.I will NEVER put my address on them.
I ALWAYS have my mobile on me. so someone can always get hold of me whatever time day or night and where ever I am!!!

I do put my address on which consists of my house number and postcode. I also have my surname and mobile number engraved.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 18.05.05 07:01 UTC
We were told by one of our dog wardens that house no. and postcode is  acceptable
as the 'address'.
Obviously Surname and contact phone no's for the owner and some people put their
vets tel no on too.
But I'd never put the dogs name on the id tag.
It's also helpful if the dog suffers a medical condition & needs medication to have a 2nd ID
tag with this info on, that way if the dog is found they get the medication they need ASAP.
- By tohme Date 18.05.05 07:13 UTC
Amazing how many Dog Wardens and police appear to be unfamiliar with the law.........

FWIW if you have lost your dog, you may well be on the phone ringing round the Dog Warden, dog homes etc etc etc

If there is no address and only a phone number on your tag it is going to make it a little more tricky for someone to return your dog in the short term and of course dogs always go missing during the hours that vets etc are open.............

Whether or not you put your dog's name on the tag is generally immaterial.  Friendly dogs will go with anyone regardless if you know their name and unsociable ones will remain so, whether or not you know what they are called! :D

For me I would do all the ringing around on my home phone as thats where I would be looking at the address book.
And also for me, my mobile has call waiting and an answer machine, so if anyone was ringing I still wouldnt miss their call.
If you put your postcode and house number on the tag, there is a web site you can go to to find the exact streetname/ address so I am afraid this still isnt an option.

Not everyone walking around has a mobile and not every street has a phone box and most certainly are not carrying around a wireless laptop to search the web

Lots of people would not take a dog home or put it in their car to do any of the above........

As brainless said, the harder you make it for the finder, the less likely they are to go out of their way to bring it back.
- By Lea Date 18.05.05 08:43 UTC
But the harder it is to find out where I live, the safer I am ;) ;)
Lea :D

Should I be worried ;) ;) ;)

- By Teri Date 18.05.05 09:19 UTC
She may know your parents, but she'd never think to ask them :D :D :D
I'm sure she's harmless really ........

Very often I have found a loose dog out of hours and it is very annoying when there is no adddress where I could just walk the dog home.  Many people can't take the dog home with them, and would be just tempted not to do anything about it rather than have to call teh dgo warden wait around or have to fuind someone to drive it to the authorities.

With address on the tag you just walk the dog uusally only a few doors or streets away.

My tags have my affix (simpler than my surname :D ) address, home Tel on one side and the message my dogs are tattooed and microchipped please contact NDTR and Petlog on the other.

The permanaent ID info will put off someone tempted to steal them.  I have had people stroking the dogs read this on the tags and ask about the Tattoos or chips.

Sorry dont have time to read the whole thread. I put my mobile number and  one side and the postcode on the other along with the word REWARD.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.05.05 07:46 UTC
The more information of where they live, the sooner they're likely to be returned ...
- By LJS Date 18.05.05 09:05 UTC
I have put my name, mobile number and a message saying 'I ( as in the Lab ) have been identichipped' That way they know that I can be found if they scan them :)
