I have a bitch that welped last week.Mum and pups are fine but she'd still digging up her bed,often scattering the pups everywhere.I have vet bed down  and even though it has a non slip bottom she still manages to ruck it up.I've just gone into her now and found the pups on the bare bottom of the welping box whilst she has the vet bed all folded up underneath her.Appart from this she is a really good mum.
Is this normal behaviour.I've had a look in my Book of the bitch but can't find any reference to ot there.None of my other bitches have behaved in this way

One of mine did it for a couple of weeks.. you get the bed all sorted , puppies in place . THen they start again..LOL

I think it is the uterus. 

In doubt though get it check out ;-)

She was checked by the vet the following day after delivery(Sat 14th).
I know it's early days yet and she may just be a bit uptight but I just wish she'd settle.

The uterus takes some time to shrink down to normal size again, and the contractions feel similar (though less intense!) to labour pains.

Tilda did this, and sent me scuttling to the vets twice to double check there were no pups or placentae left (there weren't).

It was most likely just after-pains with her.    I did make sure that her calcium and blood sugar levels were OK, and she still did it.    Seemed to be forever before she settled, but probably  apout 10 days.

Know what you mean - you leap to attention each time you hear a squeak or a digging noise!

Mine did it with her first litter. She did get an infection, but I think the rucking was just because she prefers a lumpy bed! She got the message eventually and never did it at all second time round.

She's still doing it today.I had to put the lamp on last night as I was afraid they'd get wet and cold with nothing under them to soak up their wee,I didn't want to use the heat pad incase she damaged the wiring.Pups were on the bare floor of the welping box this morning.....again.
She doesn't seem to be doing it quite so much today.A freind suggested I put carpet down and tack the 4 corners down.I have done this and put the vetbed on top so at least if she scrapes away it's only the vet bed that gets crumpled in a ball and the pups still have something underneath them.
Hopefully it will stop soon otherwise I'll take her to the vets  if you think it will do any good

I would take her to the vets for a quick check up even if its just for you peace of mind. I had an unsettled bitch after she whelped - she wanted to hide away from her pups under the stairs in the cupboard !! so I know it can be quite worrying.

It is actually a natural response A shepherd who used my BC stud dog have a bitch who always buried her puppies under her bedding(clean dry straw in his case)she would top n tail & feed them then cover them up & take herself off to work, he tried to stop her working but she got so distressed he had to let her do her own thing. She used to pop back to see to the puppies & they were the most outgoing friendly self assured puppies I have ever met.

It is a worry & I would keep a close eye on her & make sure she is comfortable, it could be she is not yet settled with them & her protecting instincts are taking over. Seriously I would give her some T Touch massage whilst she is with the puppies to help her relax whilst she is with them
