Moose finished her season about a week ago and she has now developed a horrible thick greenish coloured discharge. She is her normal loopy self and is not offher food. She is not weeing anymore than normal. Has anybody come across this before ? I have got a vets appointment for her tonight just in case.

Well I don't have any experience of this but it sounds to me as though it may be an open pyometra. I think with the contents of the uterus being able to drain you should be alright to wait for your appointment this evening but if Moose appears at all unwell or if the discharge is no longer able to drain I would get onto the vets straight away as her condition could deteriorate quite rapidly if it is pyometra.

Pyometra .. phone your vet
- By Isabel Date 30.05.02 13:04 UTC
Pyometra is an infection of the uterus (womb) open means the pus is able to drain out, but closed means it cannot and consequently the uterus becomes very enlarged with build up of pus, this is very serious and needs vet attention immediately. I think I am right in saying a closed pyometra will always lead to an emergency spay but a open pyometra may be traeated by a conservative vet with antibiotics. Did you tell you vet about her symptoms when you made you appointment and does she seem well just now.

I spoke to a nurse yesterday and she said Hmm sounds a bit starnge you had better make an appointment.

I am going tonight at 6.20pm but am now sitting here worrying myself about it.

She seemed perfectly OK. Can it deteriorate within hours ?

Quicker that that I believe. Personally if she shows any signs of being unwell I would at least insist on speaking to the vet it might be possible the nurse has not come across a case before.

I have just spoken the vet and they have said to get her there as soon as we are able if I am at all worried. They think that it is more than likely only an infection rather than Pyometra as this normally develops after four to six weeks after the season has finished. She was absolutely fine this morning after her morning run and at eher breakfast uop as normal. They said if she did have a uterus full of pus then she would not be a well puppy at all and would would have noticed immediately. I just hope they are right.

Thanks for all the help on this. very much appreciated.

Hi Lucy, I've had two closed pyos and an open one. All of them were sicky bad and not at all well, though the closed ones were much more obviously ill than the open one. All of them had surgery immeditially, and they all recovered very quickly and completely. Best of luck for this evening

I think what the vet is saying sounds resonable Lucy, certainly from what I have heard in the past and what others are saying here pyometra tends to occurs later after a season than this. I did not intend to alarm you :) Of course you do need to get this checked out but as the others seem to be confirming I think you only have to worry if Moose is appearing to be unwell in her self. Good luck this evening let us know as soon as you can :)

Dear Lucy
I'm really sorry Moose isn't well. How did you get on at the vet's?

Well she has been put on ten days of antibiotics. We have got to keep a good eye on her and if the discharge doesn't go away or gets any worse then we have got to go back to get a swab done. He was going to give her some hormones but as we said we may decide to have some pups from her.He said he wouldn't as it might cause problems if we did intend on breeding from her in the future. He gave her lots of cuddles and a biscuit and seemed quite happy with her. Quite a relief really as she is still only a baby to us and is anything ever happened to her we would be so devastated.

beacuse she been put on antibiotics, the result of the swab may come back with no results, she should have been swab before the antibiotcs, beacuse i had this talk with my vet this week beacuse of wispa,i wanted her to be swab on sunday but the localham vet would not do it,that's why we had a scan in the week, wispa back today at 5pm,the discharge has change to a clear white colour, any way all the best. if you want to talk beacuse we are going though the same thing at the moment, do call on 01252 310267 aftre 8pm
