One day id like to breed border collies, at the moment im looking at showing, i know any dogs for breeding need health tests etc. As i want to do it all properly, I ddefinately dont want to start breeding in the near future but would like to start reading on it. Are there any good books to read besides the book of the bitch. Im hoping to get some advise once i start showing.

My favourite book is "The technique of breeding better dogs" by Dr Dieter Fleig, I found it at crufts last year and is very informative, I have also got "The welping and rearing of puppies, a omplete and practical guide" by Muriel P. Lee. This one you can get at Pets at Home. Happy reading!!!

Once you have got the practical books out of the way then you get into the important aspect studying your breed in order to make good breeding decisions and knowing what is required aand how best to achieve it in your breed.

Join your National and Regional breed clubs.

Most will prodcue yearbooks and Newsletters whidch will not only containd adverts for kennels and photos but articles about health issues etc.  I would get as many back issues as you can as this will show you hoe things have changed and how they have stayed the same,a dn also any recurring trends be they in health or type etc.

Get to know the people who have influenced the breed if you can.  You will find that those who see you have a genuine interest and are in for the long haul will be very ready to help.

Attend seminars and shows, take advice asn listen.  Then decide what to make of what you are told as you gain experience.

In your breed I woudl also want to attend ISDS events and see where the breed comes from so that you don't loose sight of this as so easily happens when breeds are shown and not worked.

General books on canine anatomy, mating, whelping etc are essential reading before the time comes to actually mate your bitch but these will tell you nothing about how to breed good Border Collies ;)  For that you need to thoroughly research your breed, read as much breed specific lierature as you can get your hands on and as Brainless suggests get hold of back copies of your Breed Club year books which will contain photos of dogs in pedigrees that you are interested in.  Some folks are great at rhyming off a dogs ancestors but that's not much use if they don't actually know what those dogs looked like and whether they produced a distinct (and desirable) family resemblance when bred on from etc.
If you truly desire to breed one day, you should start off with the best possible quality bitch from which to establish your foundations.  To obtain such a bitch involves making yourself known to respected breeders, best done over a prolonged period by seeking their advice, listening and learning from their experiences, watching endless judging, visiting various breeders and seeing many litters - basically trying to "develop an eye" for what YOU like based on extensive research and on how to interpret the Standard.  Best wishes, Teri :)

Don't think I can add much to what Barbara and Teri have said. Start going to shows or working events now without a dog to watch, talk and learn. :)
