Hi everyone, have taken our 15week old cocker spaniel puppy on her first walks over the weekend, using guideline of approx 15mins at a time.  What I would like to know is wether it's normal for her NOT to toilet whilst out and about? she has come home and done her business in her usual spots in the garden and had an accident in the house earlier.  Should we be doing anything whilst out walking to encourage her to go or will it just happen naturally and eventually?

If you train her to pee and poo *on command* you will eventually be able to get her to go whenever you want. Just use a phrase every time you see her do either ..we say *Hurry up!* ....eventually she will associate that phrase with her actions.

Leaving your scent off your own territory is something that happens when the pup is more confident out and about. When young it's safer not to leave evidence that you've possibly trespassed on some other dogs' territory ...

My youngest boy was terrible - it was only when we were away overnight that he first "performed" away from home! Needless to say that now he is brave and "grown up" he wees up every blade of grass he can find :D
