I have just mated my schnauzer bitch for the second time--last time she missed. Someone enquired about a puppy and said it shoud have first vac and indentichip? First vac is about £30 so should i add this to puppy price and i thought you couldnt identichip till second vac because of the size of the needle! If i did chip it i would have to then have the hassle of transferring ownership. What do others do- i am new to breeding? thanks

Many people chip their pups before they leave, but often the vaccinations are left for the new owner's vet to do. Some won't vaccinate before 10 weeks, and most people want their pup home before then. Also, if the pup's had the first vac the new vet will re-vaccinate if the brand of vaccine used isn't the one they prefer ...

our vet contracted by our rescue centre has done first vaccine at 8 weeks of age always, for years.
i understand this is standard practice in the veterinary profession?
we then rehome the pup, and the adopters take pup plus vaccine card to there own vet and perform second vax at 10 weeks.....i understood this to be standard practice to?
in 20 odd years we have never encountered a case whereby a different vet has insisted on re-doing the first vaccine as he uses a different brand
this is new to me, and a little alarming if there are vets that do this?
surely as long as the vaccine card with original vets signature and stickers displaying vaccine type and batch number are all present and correct, it shouldnt matter??
one assumes a vaccine for parvo, for example, is a vaccine for parvo, whichever company produces it??
or am i wrong??

I gather different manufacturers' vaccines are all slightly different, and shouldn't be mixed. Our vet won't do the first vaccine till 10 weeks with the second at 12 weeks, to allow the level of maternal antibodies to fall to a low enough level to not negate the vaccine. I've been taking my dogs to this practice for 20 years and this has always been the protocol.

My pup was vaccinated by his 1st owners at 6 weeks, then, when we had him at 8 weeks, my vet did the first vaccination again because of the different type of vaccine used.

I do the microchipping myself (you can certainly have it done before pups leave, the needle size very seldom causes problems with puppies regardless of size, it's harder with kittens as they have thinner skin -I've done 7 week old Yorkies for instance with no problems at all) and what I have decided to do is to pay the extra fee for PetLog Plus. That way, you can have TWO people's contact details registered with PetLog, you can change address an unlimited number of times etc. So I am going to have all the pups I have now registered in MY name (at my own expense), with the new owner as a second contact -that way, should any ever stray or end up in rescue there is a good chance I myself will be contacted and will find out about it. I feel it is worth the extra money for peace of mind.
