Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / obsessed with flys!
- By janeandkai [gb] Date 16.05.05 12:44 UTC
Hi all....

just had to share with you the latest antics of our crazy Kai. he has developed an obsession with flys, not just the usual bombing round the house trying to catch them either.... he has started "talking" to them...lol  i have just heard him making excited winning noises and upon investigation, Kai is sat infront of the mantlepiece excitedly talking to the fly thats sat out of reach.... obviously in the hope of encouraging it to move to a point where he can reach to grab it... daft or what! :-)

would he like to join taras club for fly catchers anomynous?

oh lovely!!!!!!! i dont know anything about their behaviours though so dont know if this is breed typical, its very typical in collies & ESSs

I think buffy could join you in that.... She sits and watches them and then grabs them like a fly catcher! she has started a fancy with bees and wasps at the moment! Have a feelin i'll have a few vets visits this summer! Though you wouldn't believe it as she is passed out asleep having had a venture under the fence into next doors garden...she was soo proud of herself!

lol... i think buffy and kai would make a great team..... as i have caught him trying to catch the wasps n bees aswell, not forgetting the butterflies and birds lol.... :-)

tara has been stung by wasps on her tongue.....hasent put her off! :( expensive hobby.
i rescued her & she had developed it because she was bored, it can also be a sign of some form of eplilepsy i believe.

Spanish Water Dogs like this past time too :d
- By janeandkai [gb] Date 16.05.05 15:28 UTC
really.... i've not heard that before ( epilepsy). the other dogs that i had chased flys aswell , but its the fact that kai "talks" to them if they are out of reach that has me laughing :-)
- By michelled [gb] Date 16.05.05 15:31 UTC
apparently so,although you would notice other vacant signs too ,i dont think it is the type that would result in fits though.

in kais case i expect he continues to do it aas you laugh at him! with tara she can get very stressed out by noises so i use it as a anti stresss thing

Buffy has to wear jangly tags cause next door feeds the birds, buffy thinks this is especially for her!

She is in her cage sulking in her cage at mo, cause she just had a bath..... very cross.. but served her right for playing in the fountain then digging up the lavender yesterday!!! Filthy dog!!

aah poor buffy :-)  i have taken all the plants out of my back garden as they were too much temptation to kai.. as it is i have 5 or 6 holes a week that have to be filled back in again lol  i doubt he will grow out of that thou as the breed are know for it.
thats a good idea with the tags... my neighbours have an aviary and im hoping he doesnt realise that when he's bigger he will probably be able to get in there.

Our year old lab cross is very keen on catching flying things - he especially likes moths and daddy-long-legs as he can catch them quite easily - it is a bit of a pain when it's his last outing into the garden before he goes to bed and he's saying "oh go on just let me catch this last one and then I'll come in". I think he would happily stay out there all night doing it. He is also very partial to little crawling things - but he just keeps picking them up and spitting them out right away but he does it over and over again - poor little beetles - I suppose he doesn't like the feel of them on his tongue or maybe they nip him.

My main concern at the moment is the bumble bees - they are so huge and fly very slowly so are a good target - he watches them on the flowers and I know that one day he will catch one. Obviously he will get stung. If this happens (more like "when" I'm afraid) what do I do - do I take him straight to the vets for some sort of anti-histamine treatment or do I just supply him with ice cubes to chew to bring down the swelling? Any advise would be much appreciated.

Our last dog hated flies and would leave the room in a quite dramatic fashion if there was one in there.

it depends if you can get the sting out. its kinda hard getting a sting out of a tongue with your dog screaming.
if you can get it out just keep a good eye on them for abit to make sure they arent  having any allergic reaction.

Thanks for the advice - I hadn't even thought about having to get the sting out - had only considered the swelling - sounds like it's a vet trip then. Maybe if he gets stung once he won't do it again!

We lost a dog last year due to a bee sting to the mouth, it all happened very quickly unfortunately, so it is something that you need to be aware of.

Hi Spanishwaterdog

Very sorry to hear that you lost a dog - this is really very worrying - was it an anaphalactic shock from the sting?

Hope you don't mind me asking.

Thanks

Liz

It was, with her being a Pomeranian too, I suppose that she didn't have the stamina that a bigger dog would have unfortunately.  I suppose that they are just like us, some of us won't have any problems and others of us do have.  She was only 5 years old too.
