My lab has been well socilised and generally gets on well with all dogs and people. However as he is getting older - nearly 9 now - he appears to be getting to be really 'grumpy' with other dogs. He has never done any damage (thank god) but every now and then will take against another dog and have a go at it. To date all noise and teeth flashing with little or no contact, but its got me worried.
Any ideas what may be causing it?

Maybe he is getting a few aches and pains ie arthritis is setting in etc and so wants dogs to go away in case they crash into him etc.
Is he on glucosamine hydrochloride and or chondroitin, green lipped mussel, MSM, devils claw etc?
Fish Body Oils will also help as an anti inflammatory; also give Vitamin E with this if you give it.
Just a thought.
I did wonder and had the vet check him out, she said he was one of the fittest chockies for his age and she would consider him fit and well for a dog half his age, with no sign of joint problems - that was the bit where he jumped all over her!
However I know from past experience that he doesnt show pain, when he tore his nail off he only let out a little yelp and carried on working, so perhaps he is in more pain than he shows. However it does seem to be a particular issue with dogs as opposed to bitches. He was 'done' at 11 months and most of the dogs he has had 'issues' with have also been done.

Perhaps he is just getting a grumpy old man as happens with many males of different species :D
:D
I don't really know but as you say he is alright with the girls then perhaps his tollerance of younger fitter males is not as good :)

Hi Lucy

:D :D
I am sure if you had a little chat with him and explained how he should be acting and not to follow his Daddies behaviour then you might see some improvement ! :D
Send him round here and he can do some socialising with the three chocolate girls, that should sort him out ! ;)

LOL Lucy It was probably our chockie girl comming in to season that gave him the whole idea - trouble is it has carried on in to general and continual 'grumpiness'. Wonder what OHs excuse is? I havnt been as successful in getting his attention recently as our bitch has in getting our dogs attention! :D:D
